I love the PC Engine (and by extension the TurboGrafx 16) so it’s time for a series on this retro gaming beast of a console! Because whether you use the MiSTer FPGA Pc Engine core, real PC Engine hardware or something like Mednafen emulation…there is a ton of fun to be had! Like Parasol Stars, the sequel to Bubble Bobble and the contemporary of Bubble Symphony and Bubble Memories. It’s a 2D platformer from Taito. It’s a best retro games candidate if there ever was one! Hudson Soft and NEC knew what they were doing with this console that took on Nintendo and Sega and almost won!

Parasol Stars: The Story of Bubble Bobble III is a classic single screen 2D platformer in the Bubble Bobble universe…which is one of my favorite arcade games of all time!

This is also on ps5 now
There was supposed to be a c64 version. It was mostly finished but the developer’s girlfriend destroyed it during an argument!
I was wondering why a sequel has never been made of this game? Something like Bubble Symphony on the Saturn or turning it into a revamped Bubble Bobble 4 Friends style with new levels? Of course the original game is perfect. I've looked at the Wiki entry and an arcade version was rumoured – so not sure if there is a prototype was ever made?
I think I'll play this later, it has Retro Achievement support too.
Look at all those colours ❤❤❤
It is quite frenetic, so can understand why it was not an arcade release as it needs time and patience to master, I like how the graphics are very clean that makes it attractive to try.
I like the Megadrive Rainbow Islands. One of the best ports on the system.
Use to love playing this game VGE. I was thinking of playing again. After seeing your video, I think I will. 8^)
this was a very appealing and masterful game in the series the likes of which you don't see these days from developers. The Amiga version also had a surprisingly excellent conversion of it too at least from my understanding going between the two?
A true classic! Always a favourite at eventsmeets.
Yes, a terrific game. I think I once played it for about 8 hours straight without realising where the time went. A couple of games people might enjoy if they like this: Rod Land (Amiga and Arcade) and Qwak (Amiga and GBA).
All those cute Taito platformers were and still are my jam, not to mention minor rip-offs like Rodland. Starting with Bubble Bobble and Rainbow Islands on the Commodore 64 and then Parasol Stars on the Amiga. But I didn't play the original until that paid for emulator came along in the late 90s and I must say it's the best. I'm glad it's bundled in the Core Grafx mini, it might not be FPGA but it is the most accessible version in a country NEC didn't bother selling the console back in the day (lol this makes me bitter to this day).
Rainbow Islands, still a fantastic experience on the Speccy.
Paris All-Stars? Isn't that the Olympics?
Always found it odd that the Amiga got a port of this, but then it also got a port of the first Bonk.
My brother and I used to play this through quite a bit on the ol' Turbo. It's definitely my favorite of the series. (most variety and interesting mechanics, bonuses, etc.) Highly recommend this game!
The Bubble Bobble series is so good in all its forms.
Also has a fantastic Amiga port! Play it today on AmigaVision 😄
Pc Engine games look glorious on the Steam Deck OLED. Such rich vibrant colours, perfect scaling on that 16:10 ratio screen… you could just lick it 😅
Super fun game , too bad it wasn’t on arcade
Love this game and every "Bobble Like" retro gaming experience.
