How Pixar’s Movement Animation Became So Realistic | Movies Insider

Pixar gets its characters to move and emote by building them rigs and filling them with controls that allow animators to give them unique expressions and movements. “Toy Story 2” gave them the ability to adapt and reuse rigs for multiple characters, allowing a wide array of characters of all shapes and sizes. In “Finding Nemo,” animators learned how to make fish show emotions despite their lack of eyebrows. Major breakthroughs occurred during “The Incredibles,” in which animators now had the capability to give humans muscles and skin that moved like the real thing, eventually allowing “Ratatouille” to stretch the human mouth far and control a character’s loose movements. Meanwhile in “Cars,” a new technology called ground locking let cars drive on a straight path, while new stretchy rigs were created for realistic octopus tentacles in “Finding Dory” and an especially dynamic dog tongue in “Coco.” Thanks to new features, like the ability to add tendons onto hands and a digital piano that played by itself, Pixar was able to show complex piano playing. None of it would have been possible without the animation and rigging breakthroughs that came before it.

I remember watcing the movie and i was amazed with the how beauteful the city looked! As someone who has never been to a big city like New York, it was super interesting to see normal ppl just living there. I just wanted to see more of it! But got dissapointed when it switched to the afterlife world. 🥲
@StackRunItUp August 15, 2024 - 8:09 am
the fact that toy story had better animation than alot of animated films today says alot about how amazing pixar is.....
@emanley7 August 15, 2024 - 8:09 am
I've found that hands are some of the hardest things to animate on the human body. When the trailer for Soul came out, I was being mentored by an Animator at Pixar (Nathan Wall) and I was telling him how one of my favorite shots from the trailer was the close up of Joe's hands playing the piano because hands/fingers are just so dang complicated to animate. The best part was finding out that it was actually ONE OF HIS SHOTS! I'm not sure if he was assigned that shot because he knew how to play the piano or if it was just coincidence, but he nailed it, and so did all of the other animators!
@hpadgaming5843 August 15, 2024 - 8:09 am
Which softwares they used?
@buraktopaloglu4684 August 15, 2024 - 8:09 am
I thought animation was hard. I was wrong. It’s way harder.
@XtremeSk8ter August 15, 2024 - 8:09 am
Everyone always talks about how animators are underrated, when really they’re the ones who get the attention while the sculptors and hard surface modellers get thrown into a quiet alley and shot in the back 😂😂😂
@rk1yen August 15, 2024 - 8:09 am
1. They got a reference. Now your job has become 40% much easier!
2. Tendons moving are part of the (rig). The rig can make everything much easier! As if you were to move one bone back it would bend up.
3. So considering that they had these (should be given because they work for a BILLION DOLLAR ANIMATION INDUSTRY) this would of have been super dupa easy for the animators and saved their time :D

(edit) They also probably had bezier curves too and im talkin about the piano part
@CoolestDudest August 15, 2024 - 8:09 am
I guess you could say soul has a lot of soul in it

As someone who's finishing an animation degree, this is one of the most difficult parts of the pipeline to master. I will 100% not be applying to any rigging jobs after graduation 😂
@Cleenishere August 15, 2024 - 8:09 am
I have respect for 3d animators a lot more than 2d
