US Navy Pilot Rates 10 Fighter-Pilot Scenes In Movies | How Real Is It? | Insider

by admin

Vincent Aiello spent nearly 25 years in the US Navy as a fighter pilot. He rates the realism of fighter-pilot scenes in popular movies. Vincent flew the F/A-18 Hornet and Super Hornet and the F-16 Fighting Falcon. He has completed over 3,800 flight hours and 705 carrier landings, and served as a TOPGUN instructor and air wing operations officer. He left the Navy in 2017 to become a commercial airline pilot. He also hosts the popular podcast “The Fighter Pilot Podcast.”

Vincent analyzes the realism of dog-fight scenes in “Tomorrow Never Dies” (1997), “Iron Eagle” (1986), and “The Final Countdown” (1980). He also rates scenes with fighter pilots attacking other craft, such as “Air Force One” (1997) and “Independence Day” (1996). He looks at stunts featuring US aircraft such as “True Lies” (1994), “We Were Soldiers” (2002), and “Live Free or Die Hard” (2007). He breaks down the skills of Tom Cruise in “Top Gun” (1986) and addresses why fighter pilots have nicknames such as “Maverick.”

In the top gun scene, the F5 would have easily out maneuvered an F-14, like half the size and much higher turn rate.

@xpropos August 7, 2024 - 8:44 am

I clicked because i saw Iron-man, now where's Iron-man discussion ????!!!!

@ksk1818 August 7, 2024 - 8:44 am

Get this guy to rate Hot Shots

@skytwoplayz9649 August 7, 2024 - 8:44 am

Bro got 1 thing wrong about true lies. AGM 65 isn’t laser guided. It’s TV and it has its own seeker. The harriers can peel off like that without any effect on the missile.

@skarmex3439 August 7, 2024 - 8:44 am

Why have Iron Man in the thumbnail but not have it included?

@personM4N August 7, 2024 - 8:44 am

Has anyone made a movie with a 9/10 or 10/10 "Fighter-Pilot Scene" in a movie yet, that's what I really want to know.

@sixft7in August 7, 2024 - 8:44 am

15:00 Down in reactor department, we called the Red Shirts "BB Stackers".

@Chrinik August 7, 2024 - 8:44 am

I think the swiss or canadians, who operate the F/A-18 on land, may have drogue chutes equipped on their planes. But how a US Navy Pilot would get his hands on a swiss or canadian F/A-18 instead is a mystery to me.

And one gripe about movie Callsigns, which the sequel actualy kind of fixed. Pilot nicknames are usually embarassing or jokes based on the person or something they did or happened to em. Not something "cool" per se.
The sequel to Top Gun made me smile when they had all these Pilots with "cool" nicknames…only for them to explain the story behind them and they were all some embarassing stuff.

And another edit of horrifying trivia especially for the expert, being a naval aviator. The flying scenes in Final Countdown were indeed filmed with real planes, and the navy pilots in those F-14s were almost stalling very close to the ocean to get those dogfighting shots with the significantly slower Zeros.

@LordHayabusa85 August 7, 2024 - 8:44 am

The US Navy has some really boring and uncreative ship names. If I were in charge of the names I’d be naming ships after Sea gods and Sea monsters among other things.

Boo on you for this one.

@plisskenetic August 7, 2024 - 8:44 am

Always believed Air ForceOne was BS. So much of the action was just so fake AS!

@jollyplaguedoctor7512 August 7, 2024 - 8:44 am

15:14 I beg your pardon?

@TobyIKanoby August 7, 2024 - 8:44 am

Propably depends on the specifics of the fire ball, but I don't think it would be a big problem to fly through it. The possible debris (including fluids) is probably the biggest danger.

@FS2K4Pilot August 7, 2024 - 8:44 am

That’s actually an X-35B. And if I’m not mistaken, it never carried an internal gun.

@ThomasAT86 August 7, 2024 - 8:44 am

The more I watch these, the more I appreciate realistic movie scenes. Even without an expert/professional talking about such scenes, it really bothers me when movies are so damn unrealistic. Almost like the director being lazy, kinda insulting.

@Andy-Mesa August 7, 2024 - 8:44 am

Peppy Hare taught me that barrel rolls work every time.

The bridge in true lies was blown up. It was set for demo because a new bridge was built already. Its now a fishing pier

@That1Moai2743 August 7, 2024 - 8:44 am

@m3017co August 7, 2024 - 8:44 am

I would have loved to see how realistic he thought a cobra maneuver was.

@DMoneyTaz15 August 7, 2024 - 8:44 am

Hey President. I got this. Sir.

@Snipergoat1 August 7, 2024 - 8:44 am

I remember seeing the James Bond in the theater thinking that jet is going to flame right out. An engine need oxygen rich and preferably cool air. The exact opposite of what you will get in the middle of a firestorm.

@justyourcoolgrandpa1384 August 7, 2024 - 8:44 am

You can see how long this guy has been flying a plane because of the red marks on his mouth and nose 🤣

@GrandmaKeith August 7, 2024 - 8:44 am

I thought this was Dylan McDermott in the beginning doing these reviews.

@GrandmaKeith August 7, 2024 - 8:44 am

I'm surprised no Hot Shots scenes were included.

@GrandmaKeith August 7, 2024 - 8:44 am

We all know that Harrison Ford has held a pilots license for a long time. I think they just wanted to exploit that in Air Force One

@shadowturk-6517 August 7, 2024 - 8:44 am

8:18 yeah but some russian MF invented how to do it 😂

@rafar9563 August 7, 2024 - 8:44 am

Iron-Man can be called also as the Fe-Male

@alexwitts9464 August 7, 2024 - 8:44 am

2:50 my dad was a fighter pilot in the British Royal Navy, and he said his call sign was "Limelight."

@SergioArellano-yd7ik August 7, 2024 - 8:44 am

Broken Arrow was code for a missing nuclear weapon.

@ambush_akula5261 August 7, 2024 - 8:44 am

small critique, the kfir is armed with the DEFA 30mm revolver cannon, it would be a super high speed tapping sound for its gun rather than a BRRRRT heard with gatling guns like the M-61, still I agree with him with the sound of the ROF of the gun.

@dovak159_2 August 7, 2024 - 8:44 am

Air Force maintainer: gasp he acknowledges their aircraft leak a ton of crap!? Bravo!

@QuintinMassey August 7, 2024 - 8:44 am

12:44 new pilot training scenario 🤔 knowing how to defend against this would be invaluable when hi-jacking an enemies jet.

@rolobrown123 August 7, 2024 - 8:44 am

@Manny30004 August 7, 2024 - 8:44 am

I swear this video went trough Iron Man

@Gorhajus August 7, 2024 - 8:44 am

I would love to see a breakdown of Flight of the Intruder!

@jeno826 August 7, 2024 - 8:44 am

I love the first TOP GUN but it’s ridicules when you see that stupid joystick on the F 5 ! I mean how much money they spent on that movie? And that’s the best that they could come up with?

@dragonweyr44 August 7, 2024 - 8:44 am

10:58 That's an Air Force major, not a Lt. Col.
