Review: Neodori Forever (Steam) – Defunct Games

by admin

Defunct Games reviews Neodori Forever by Strobetano and Crescent Moon Games, available now on PC and Mac.

Inspired by an era that brought us OutRun and Rad Racer, Neodori Forever is a throwback racing game that gets the look and spirit right. This is a cross-country racer where we speed past the sights while going up against rivals, all while doing everything in our power to not run out of gas. Although the rival races are a bit anticlimactic and the handling takes some getting used to, this is still a fast and fun racing game that will remind you of the good old days when you did more than just go around in a circle. This is a fun game.

I really wanted to like this game more. I love the style, it looks great. Especially when most are trying to emulate the 2d sprite scaler games. However the controls are just horrible and the gas tank mechanic is awful so is the weird side to side camera movement. If they just fixed a couple things and tightened up the controls this game could be amazing.

OutRun 2006 Coast 2 Coast is the peak of driving games 🙂

Hate racing games where that just handle the gas pedal for you. Better off buying Slipstream, Hotshot Racing and Horizon Chase.

Tokyo Extreme Racer Zero. It was pretty awesome.

This game gets better as the player gets better at it, controls are weird at first because we got used to traditional stuff. The player just has to realize that they have to tap the drift button and then adjust the drift to the optimal angle and leave it like that all the way (because there are only about 3 types of road curves). The game gets super addictive with its coin collecting, police avoiding and trying to stay alive, actually the gameplay loop reminds me a lot of Konami's "Road Fighter" in a way that you are actually not racing anyone, just avoiding the obstacles and surviving till the end. I really love this game and wish they made a sequel with more music but they need to handle the sound a bit better. I understand that they lowered the engine noise since the car is mostly going at full speed and it could get annoying, but they could make it so that the volume starts normal, then gets lowered as you reach the high speed for a longer period. Music is varied and sounds awesome but some of the tracks are a bit quiet, they need to put them all at the same volume. Also I didn't like the sound of the car crashes accompanied with strong flashing of the vehicle which is way to close to the camera (for that blinking to happen), it can be a bit annoying because it gets distractive. In the sequel they could also introduce more hills, jumps and weather effects (rain, snow and storms also make nice vibes). If they tweaked some things like that, I would buy it, even at a higher price. I hope the developer reads this and they take action! BONUS: Did anyone notice the intentional or unintentional "LoZ Ocarina of Time" intro music reference? Just listen to the first few notes of the title screen and soak in the vibe…I believe it was done to evoke similar feels of "going back on an adventure", or in this case, the road…awesome stuff!

Wow you lay into the game, and rightly so, then do a sharp 180 and say it's one of the best throwback racers. Even ignoring the hideous choice of emulating PS1 style this is one of the most artless racing games I've ever seen, deeply uninspired. It feels like the artist just couldn't be bothered and create a draft for an object, sat back and said "That'll do".
Just compare it to the sheer beauty of Outrun where each stages colours blend together to not just create a location but also a mood. This trash fails completely. Horizon Chase (albeit a circuit racer) showed how you can marry the modern with a retro aesthetic and come out on top.
Favourite Racing game of all time is probably the sadly Xbox only Rallisport Challenge 2. Absolutely packed with events and cars and with sublime gameplay. A close second would be the original Grid on Xbox 360, marrying arcade handling with just enough sim to make you need to learn how to drive. And being able to do pixel by pixel rewinds of heavy accidents where bits are thrown off or crushed and able to swing the camera 360 degrees to get every angle never lost it's fun. Sadly every Grid game since has been a disappointment.

I have no answer for QotD, but are you going to review Esse Proxy? It just released today. It seems indie enough I think you'd be perfect to cover it 😀

@cyberpunknut1099 August 3, 2024 - 7:03 am

The original Hang On on the master system did this. You kept getting time extensions until you just ran out. Boring.

Having you have to take a pee break on the long drive would have been more creative than bumping into gas icons.

QOTD, if Mario Kart 8 counts then that's it.

@wilrivera2668 August 3, 2024 - 7:03 am

… I am not a fan of new games with old aesthetics. I liked being wowed by the effort put into the game …

As usual, the answer is split second 🙂

Every reviewer does "the dad joke" before every review. It's always tedious Why be like everyone else? Why can't anyone be different?

@Hayseed1976 August 3, 2024 - 7:03 am

Ridge Racer 7 hands down is my favorite. Wish I still had a ps3 just for it or it was released.

@TyNicholsen August 3, 2024 - 7:03 am

Besides the rival races being a bit weird it's pretty fun. It's not the typical kinda racing game I would play but still fun!

@acecarrera1 August 3, 2024 - 7:03 am

I like the fact while this game's graphic is simple, the level is well designed which makes you feel going somewhere.Still, the best racing game is this genre is Outrun 2 (and its iterations), a game that only needs Ferrari license to be released today, because everything else is perfect.

@juststatedtheobvious9633 August 3, 2024 - 7:03 am

Rock N' Roll Racing would probably be my favorite, and it speaks for itself.

Burn-Out 3 on X-Box with a custom soundtrack and "Highway to Hell" is so close that it might as well be a tie, even though it isn't quite.

And I want to give an honorable mention to Need for Speed: Most Wanted….on Gameboy Micro. One of the few where I unlocked everything. It's just so streamlined a Sunday drive, that I was willing to forgive all the very rough edges.

@JenMistress August 3, 2024 - 7:03 am

That rival stop right at the end, even if winning makes me think of Big Rig Off Road Racing. At least this game doesn't seem to have as many bugs as that game did. As for the question, believe that I've mentioned it before, but my fav racing is Mario Kart. Just like the extra little features to it, makes it unique and I enjoy it.

@priorwitness August 3, 2024 - 7:03 am

Yeah I'm sorry this game looks pretty meh to me. I grew up playing games like Rad Racer and Outrun and while they are fun for a hot minute I prefer the standard racing game. So for me my all time favorite racing game is Gran Turismo 2 on Playstation. It had a great blend of arcade/sim racing, upgrading your car, buying new cars, and a great sense of progression as you moved up the various tiers. Not to mention the racing itself was fantastic and easy to pick up and play.
