Ken Silverman’s Build Engine

In this video you can see the test game that Ken Silverman used to develop his sector-based build engine starting in 1994. It demonstrates most of the things the engine was capable of, even if it’s not a real game.

The build engine was used in well-known games such as Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior, Blood, Powerslave and Redneck Rampage. In 2000, Ken published his source code for the build engine.

I've made maps for Doom, Duke 3D and Quake, and even with all the improvements these three engines got during the years, Build is still the most advanced one in my opinion; there's simply nothing you can't do with it.

Such an underrated and unknown engine, it's a shame only a few people know its true power. XD

Someone port the test game maps to Duke Nukem 3D.

1:22 that early Duke model cracked me up, did not expect to see him in such an early build (no pun intended) of that game.

John Carmack walked so Ken Silverman could run.

I heard this little thing became somewhat popular.

what amazes me is the sheer wizardry some mappers can do by exploiting the engines limits, and thankfully the engine still thrives to this day :) with ion fury being a pretty big succes. one of the most fun engines to work with

Happy 15th Anniversary to this Video!

the demo for the build engine always feels so cozy

This is clearly Duke's crazy dream.

He was 20 years old when he made this in the 90s, what a beast

this engine will always have a place in my heart. I spent so many years in the late 90s with pads of graph paper building maps for Duke 3d, Blood, and Shadow Warrior instead of learning stuff in high school. Knew the engine inside and out in terms of building maps back then.

Duke looked better in this than in Duke3D

I love the paintbrush texturework that still looks like the original Ken‘s Labyrinth! Heck, there is even a throwback section from that original game featured in the video. It is hard to believe that something so "childish" looking was then turned into Duke Nukem and Shadow Warrior. However, did you know that some of the iconic features of Duke Nukem 3D, such as replenishing health by drinking water are actually taken from Ken‘s Labyrinth? You can see the sprite for the original drinking fountain being re-used in this video as well at one point.

Did the original engine have 3d voxel models?
@Nikku4211 August 2, 2024 - 11:26 pm
Is this music actually in the demo or is it edited in?
@spearPYN August 2, 2024 - 11:26 pm
Build is great, but Ken was also a terrific musician. I love his music.
@youdj_app August 2, 2024 - 11:26 pm
The music is dope

ken sacrificed his teen years to work on this engine and we sacrificed ours playing games on it

People say the build engine was outdated on release as it had to compete with a true 3D game in Quake, but Quake was unbelievably limited. Very few details were put in thanks to how much processing power just rendering the models took. The build engine had no such worries, and games like Blood show a depth not possible at the time with the Quake engine.

Best 2D engine. Blowing away ID Engine for DOOM
