This song is actually about the worst day of his life.. the day he almost committed suicide.. however, after he got through I he realized it was the greatest day ever because he knew .. if that was the worst day ever, that every day afterwards had to be better and that's a beautiful thing

It's a pithy technical point but the guitar 'slides' that you refer to are actually string bends. Pretty sure that's James Iha doing his thing.

When I was in high school with this came out all I use to listen to was rap, but this song kicked ass. Now almost 30 years later all I listen to is rock and metal.
This song is a tongue in cheek take on suicide. Today is the greatest day was sarcastic AF.
