Why the Deadly Asbestos Industry is Still Alive and Well

Despite irrefutable scientific evidence calling out the dangers of asbestos, 2 million tons of the carcinogen are exported every year to the developing world, where it’s often handled with little to no regulation.

For this episode of VICE Reports, correspondent Milène Larsson traveled to the world’s largest asbestos mine in the eponymous town of Asbest, Russia, to meet workers whose livelihoods revolve entirely around the dangerous mineral. Surprisingly, the risks associated with asbestos mining didn’t seem to worry the inhabitants; in fact, asbestos is the city’s pride, celebrated with monuments, songs, and even its own museum.

Larsson then visits Libby, Montana, another mining town almost on the other side of the globe, where the effects of asbestos exposure are undeniable: 400 townspeople have died from asbestos-related diseases, and many more are slowly choking to death. Why is the deadly industry of mining and selling asbestos still alive and well?

Little do people know that the WTC was destroyed b/c of it being an asbestos trap. So many people that survived and escaped 911/ also those the helped remove the debris have died from the direct exposure. Look into it.

It’s a tourist attraction town, with no one visiting and the museum empty 😂

Canada still mines asbestos!

Russia won't admit asbestos is dangerous because Russians, for the most part, believe in science and philosophy(as it relates to logic). They know that if they admit it's dangerous, that they would then have to do something about it, or else they would look like hypocrites. To do something about it means coming to terms with certain truths, changing their ways, holding people accountable. This means exposing the people who lied about the dangers of it, which would also expose them to potential financial liabilities. This is where the "murder option" always comes in, and the Russian lambs are sacrificed at the oligarchic alter of wealth, power, humiliation, and "national security". Putting an industry on blast is like spitting in the face of oligarchs, and Putin himself. People won't speak out for fear of their life or livelihood. That's why the doctor says he likes the air in Asbest, Russia...he's not about to be sacrificed. This is a socialism/communism era leftover, when you dare not cross the state. To cross the state is to make the communist or socialist government look bad, and that cannot happen, so critics must be silenced. Although these may not be the original intentions of communist or socialist leaders, it has statistically always been the outcome. It really just all boils down to an extremely wealthy or powerful person being exposed and humiliated for what they have really done, and revenge killing the people who expose them, Talented Mr. Ripley style. It would be nice to see Russian government step away from its old ways, because Russia is a nation of truly great, wonderful people, with a great sense of national pride, who just want to do right by their country, family, and neighbor.

I work in health and safety. I've referenced this doc for years to asbestos companies and I'm always pleased to hear it's well known and often played in it's entirety as part of training progresses. Well done to all involved for producing an informed and effective lasting piece of journalism.

We all have to make choices, and for most, paying bills means compromising our health for the sake of our family. Happens for generations.

19:28. Question. Is this dangerous?
Man looks up and to the side. This is indicates that he is thinking of an answer. He then evades the question. Answer: "life is dangerous."
Sir. How much money is the asbestos industry paying you?
He continues to answer the interviewer's questions while shaking his head no.
How do u live with yourself, Sir?
@RobertaG556 July 26, 2024 - 3:39 am
My mom died of lung tumors. She never smoked. But worked in factories full of asbestos, back in the day😢
@kitefan1 July 26, 2024 - 3:39 am
Thanks for this excellent video. One of the big categories of people exposed to asbestos where seaman in the US Navy who decommissioned asbestos insulated ships without any safety equipment. Even a respirator would have made a difference.
@tmann153 July 26, 2024 - 3:39 am
Asbestos fibers that are in the air and breathed in by people clearly are a cancer risk. Not all develop cancer as some seem to be genetically resistant to developing it. My father was in the heating and sheet metal business and took out many old gravity-style furnaces that were wrapped in layers of asbestos insulation. he was unaware of the risk and wore no protective gear. He would be covered in dust from ripping off the insulation. He never developed the cancer in his lungs or the lining around the lungs. He lived to age 92 and died in a car crash. He also was a smoker and that can worsen asbestos-connected cancer.
@marcoborrillo8097 July 26, 2024 - 3:39 am
this entire video is almost exactly like the same exact videos we see for coal mining in West Virginia or the oil refineries of Luisiana. Even the small worker's homes look the same.

@brucecourchene8090 July 26, 2024 - 3:39 am
How can the Russians be that ignorant with what is known about asbestos today?!?🤡
@Ruvi5000 July 26, 2024 - 3:39 am
I mean what are the mine workers options really? He knows the stuff is killing him and everybody he loves but what is he supposed to do about it? Leave? Yeah as if he had to pay to move somewhere else and start an entirely new life

@koryabel6319 July 26, 2024 - 3:39 am
Thing about asbestos is it takes a long period of time to affect our health. It can happen in a shorter time frame if super concentrated. It’s like tobacco, the manufacturers tried to cover it up for years and finally the real truth is evident. Just like smoking cigarettes for a week won’t give you lung cancer but years of repeated use will and it speeds up the more you smoke.
@moonman6359 July 26, 2024 - 3:39 am
What I learned: Asbestos is based and cool.
@avinashbhujan1376 July 26, 2024 - 3:39 am
It needs to be banned for good, it's an invisible killer, and just because a small town needs to survive on it, doesn't mean we put at risk millions of people.
@aidkgjehebejje July 26, 2024 - 3:39 am
it was well known since the 1930s, history is for fools
@haydendenard2693 July 26, 2024 - 3:39 am
Asbestos is actually an amazing material I personally don't think we should have just banned it and ran we could have looked into ways to make it safe because the siding and other building materials that were made of it never deteriorated there are hones EVERYWHERE that still have Asbestos siding and other products to this day in every city in the US
@jolness1 July 26, 2024 - 3:39 am
I live in Montana and poor Libby has had a rough go from asbestos. It’s a massive superfund site and cancer and mesothelioma are so common. And the economy collapsed.
@Idaho900 July 26, 2024 - 3:39 am
Vice should interview Americans on GMO, and Americans would say we're not particularly afraid of GMO, but some are, for the most part, we are not afraid of it, unlike parts of world china and russia are afraid.

Hey, they're not so tough after all. Once you bring GMO up😂
@Idaho900 July 26, 2024 - 3:39 am
It's funny how russia says your body can heal itself, then why dont they say the same for gmo food 😂 since they don't like gmo
@ambientblue-eyedmonkey8849 July 26, 2024 - 3:39 am
2:06 Lovely houses, you get back home after hard work, sit back watch cable TV, get drunk on weekend, no worries, while in USA people are worried to keep their job, house, crime, mandatory jabs.... lol
@jamestessman1433 July 26, 2024 - 3:39 am
Asbestos works incredibly well for a lot of things, it has a major downside to it though
@djking44151 July 26, 2024 - 3:39 am
I guess it's not dangerous if you've already got a poor quality of life and a short life expectancy?
Or maybe it still is....

In the summer time the heat will make it airborne easily...pray it rains everyday 😮 although other asbestos types are hydrophobic

Just crazy. We need to do something about Russia.
@theintelectualdragon2310 July 26, 2024 - 3:39 am
just for some perspective we even used asbestos in the us for sewer pipes its called ac pipe and its kinda really bad it infects all the soil around it when you remove it and it should honestly be a bigger deal removing it yuo have to soak it with water to cut it because the concrete and asbestos turn to dust that gets everywhere.
@corysmith7148 July 26, 2024 - 3:39 am
Hey if you don't bother asbestos, asbestos doesn't bother you...
@angeldreamzzz9692 July 26, 2024 - 3:39 am

@gregc33487 July 26, 2024 - 3:39 am
