Acer Chromebook Spin 311 Review – The Flexible Option | MobbJustice On Tech (Ep 82)

by admin

In this edition, MobbJustice reviews the Acer Chromebook Spin 311. This is a convertible device that can be used as a laptop or tablet. We look at how the device can be used on a daily basis for productivity, media consumption and other uses.

Chromebook’s are notebook computers running Google’s Chrome OS (operating system). The targeted audience of ChromeOS has tended to be the education market, particularly high school and college students.

What do you think of this machine? Is it a viable productivity or schooling alternative? What’s your experience of Chromebooks, if any? Tell us what you think in the comments.

Thank you to the team at Acer for sending this machine our way. I spent a few weeks with the laptop before it was send back. This is not a paid review.

A superb review of a device type which will expand rapidly from predominantly the education sphere to very many others.
My own career as a cognitive psychologist started in special education, mainstream development of the UK curriculum then, after serious illness limited my formerly wide "canvas" I worked between education and the UK's National Health system, specializing in complex needs diagnostics. Our hub was based at Cambridge University where we had academic spin-offs and and there were help hubs across Cambs and Norfolk. I am long retired but still practise.
We found it prudent to use inexpensive laptops in the field in case of damage and there was something of a fashion for tiny laptops 20+ years ago with prices varying wildly from very expensive Samsungs through semi-toughened Dells and increasingly to Acer, because the latter used the same CPUs but did more with them and framework/chassis strength was designed in.
Hitherto Acer had been associated with innovative technologies in Asia but their tough, lightweight and less expensive attractions but we discovered keyboards, screens and ports allowed for joint and free standing uses. Increasingly, versions of ward 'notebooks' for hospital use proliferated and were found to be able to run specially written meta-programs which could be secured.
After a brief hiatus and product range review, dropping cell phone production ties in the process, Acer produced different classes of machines and excellent monitors too. Tablets (when they were ubiquitous with the expensive i-pad starting a trend) followed and were conservative and well made. They still are but with the advent of Chromebooks Acer was ready and able to develop the concept use targets with their years of experience in making machines for the many and not the few with good components and solid electronics based on chassis types already in production.
Acer makes high end equipment and 'bells and whistles' products but their strength as a manufacturer lies in building on solid foundations, maintaining excellent support and being able to innovate and refine with function being more important than looks.
Your own comment about the advantages of 'un-cool' thick bezels having a key use in tablet mode is an example of Acer's thinking.

Thank you for the informative review. I am looking for a machine that can be used like a tablet, but not have the constrains connected with the Android versioning. The problem with the Android tablets is that after a while the apps cannot be updated because your Android version is too old, and without an update the app cannot run. How does the Chrome OS deal with this issue? Does Android Apps run on an Android Virtual machine? Which Android version runs on the Chrome OS machine, and how is it updated?
