After years of focusing on the best games for the NES, I decided to change gears and focus on lesser known cartridges that have, for one reason or another, generally escaped the public discussion and general nostalgia. This series highlights many of the relatively unknown, obscure, and unloved titles in the Nintendo Entertainment System’s library. Some of these games are at best mediocre. Many are painfully bad, some of the worst NES games around. Most are hilarious for all the wrong reasons! Occasionally, OCCASIONALLY, a handful of them are actually good, borderline hidden gems.

While you won’t find any of these on the NES Classic, some of these titles have managed to make their way onto the Nintendo Switch, so if you don’t have an original Nintendo console or ROMs escape you ethically or technologically, there are several ways to play them.

Want more? Me too! Until then, lots of other articles where the pictures don’t move and words have to be read can be found on my website: http://top100nesgames.com

Love this game to death, and it looks so good for nes

I'm currently playing Icicle Race on C64 which is a port/clone of Fire n Ice, and I'm frustratingly stuck on world 7 - Round 3. The C64 version is near but not identical. There's an extra block of ice in a line which means when you drop the ice beneath it, you still can't climb up to get on top and finish the level. I was even following a NES Fire and Ice playthrough video and you can see by comparison that the two game maps are not quite identical. That one small details is making it impossible 😟

This game I've had since childhood. I love the music and how each world has its own tune.

I just discovered this game recently when looking for games for my new ZX Spectrum Next computer. I downloaded the Spectrum version that came out around 2003 and I'm finding it fantastic.

I saw this game on Nintendo Switch Online and tried it out, and oh my god this game is ridiculously underrated. Currently on 2-9 but i am 100% beating this game!

How in the EF did you manage to get through this entire review without making a single schnapps reference?

Forgive the lateness of my reply. I only just discovered the channel about 2 weeks ago.

Never played it but it looks like fun!

Have both Solomons Key for the NES and Fire and Ice on the Amiga. They both had a very primative design and feel even back in the day but are still fun to play. I like the ideas and presentation of these games. Simple but somewhat different and original.
@brentburgess5218 July 21, 2024 - 11:11 am
fire and ice was my favorite NES game. And my biggest gaming regret is selling it to funcoland (gamestop) for probably next to nothing with the rest of my nes collection.

Many years ago, my local Toys R Us was full of unsold Fire N Ice carts. It came out too late in the NES library to catch on.

Did I just see Panic Restaurant?
@seanmyster6 July 21, 2024 - 11:11 am
Just like any frozen treat, Fire 'N Ice should be savored in short bursts, lest you suffer from brain freeze 🥶

My mom used to absolutely love puzzle games in the NES/SNES days, and I remember us renting this game once and her beating it during the rental period. I was pretty young and could barely understand how to play it, but she blazed through it. I'll always remember that one of the bosses calls Dana an "upstart," a word I'd never heard before, and my mom had to teach me what it meant.

There was also quite a debate in my family about whether Dana was a boy or a girl... it wasn't obvious to us at first...

This is my favourite puzzle game for NES. Have played it thru many times after discovering this gem! I just love this simle game mechanics so much, what i have search if you can get similar to another platforms, but it doest exist as same level than Solomon Keys have versions from gameboy to Amiga. Theres 50 bonus levels after completing first 100 levels and if someone love this game as much as i do there is 2 romhacks for this game (both released 2022) and those both are awesome and have more challenge than this orinal game 🙂
@ChicagoRetroGamer July 21, 2024 - 11:11 am
Oh man, I remember renting this once from Blockbuster and I can remember actually really liking it. haha, cheers and great share!
@HighFiveGhost50 July 21, 2024 - 11:11 am
I gotta lotta nostalgia for Solomon’s Key, but this follow up was not my thing.
@childofcascadia July 21, 2024 - 11:11 am
Ugh. This was dropped in the switch nes catalog. I tried it expecting some retro RPG and got some puzzle shit. Pissed me off.
@GenerationPixel July 21, 2024 - 11:11 am
That looks a decent little game. A bit basic for 1993, but I still play Lemmings and Angry Birds in 2023, so yeah, I might have a look at this one 😎👍
@francisreuter6294 July 21, 2024 - 11:11 am
i think more people know about it since it was put on the nes switch online a few years ago
@josephbradshaw6985 July 21, 2024 - 11:11 am
Puzzle Games! I think I'm going to love them, 10 mins later I'm glancing over at Contra and Guerilla War, hearing the siren's call of guns blazing action.
