“It’s kind of like having a cocktail party on the internet.” – Jenni Trent Hughes.
Sian Williams and Dermot Murnaghan are joined by Stuff Magazine editor Tom Dunmore and social commentator Jenni Trent Hughes to discuss Facebook, a social networking website that – since being made available to the general public in late 2006 – has grown rapidly in popularity. It’s part of a burgeoning online trend known as social media.
What exactly is social media, what is it for, and why are people using it?

To be fair I didn’t realise marketplace had been on Facebook from the early days!
Narcissist Book
Immediately after this segment, Jenni received her first friend request from Quentin Tarantino.
I checked both guests' Facebook pages today.:
Tom Dunmore is still a regular Facebook contributor.
Jenni Tent Hughes has only been updating her profile pic since 2019, remaining text-free since then.
Got to love the comments on here saying they deleted all social media long ago, but here you are commenting on a social media page 😄
Facebook doesn't even let you contact friends. They control who you can contact. Facebook is a useless forum. I don't bother with it much anymore…
Geez they're so optimistic about it all! 2024 and like most of the rest of the internet facebook is an absolute dumpster fire hellscape.
Brilliant. Facebook was only fun for about 10 years maybe between 2007 & 2017. After that it was pretty much trash. It had a good run at it, but I wouldn't ever use it again. Like everything, people find ways to ruin it in the end. So good to watch this.
2024: We do not have a clear answer , it was just a a waste of time . If you read this in 2007 you have been warned
Upload more breakfast archives 👍
Allow your friends to see what your shite looks like,or allow the DWP to see you on holiday when you should be searching for work.
If only we knew back then that it would destroy the world.
1:54 this aged badly. It’s actually now doing worse for society, with the likes of twitter, tik tok and many more. People are sucked into these apps now that they can’t get away from them
Seemed like a novelty back then. How it has taken over our lives
Although I haven't used it for years, I wish I had never, ever used it at all.
The world would be a much better place without facebook, its its founder and the people who tell him what to do in it.
Sian was pretty spot on with her comment about the consequences of posting feet pics
Wow..Tom…. Arent you a visionary. … not .. id employ you….not
Some things are best left in the past. Move on !
I was really pleased when you the website ‘friends reunited’ became available. It was a place to relive memories and to share old photographs (particularly school photos)
Facebook never had that appeal. Only through looking FB pages do I realise how many truly sick and toxic people live their lives online.
the best site to invade your privacy
I quit facebook years ago… and good riddance! It was great at first… until it warped into a weird "monkey on your back" that followed you everywhere…
1:37 – I remember her (Jenni Trent Hughes). She used to be on tv all the time. Where is she now??
That part where she said shy people use Facebook and learn social skills which they then use in real life made me laugh. That is not at all how social media affects people now. I feel like people growing up with social media are even more afraid of face-to-face interactions than anyone before.
They should just call it pay to not be shadow banned Book…
I call it unsocial network
Man, Sian Williams was a snack then.
Again I am shocked to see BBC television from 2007 deemed so old it is listed as BBC Archive status!
Not yet an answer
1:43 how strange that now most people can’t hold a decent conversation as most have an attention span of 5 seconds (mainly thanks to shorts / TikTok), or if they do talk it’s at a hundred miles an hour or over someone OR worse still, most are repeating some garbage they think is true…”because it was social media).
FB (& others ) have rotten communication to a non-natural state. It’s created fabrication, lies and distracted people from their lives by watching other peoples ones instead.
Envy and insecurity is rife.
I don’t think anyone saw that coming during these early years.
I would actually like to see these interviewed people reacting to this nowadays. I wonder how their opinions have changed
Back before Facebook became mostly populated by angry bitter middle aged people
Don’t listen to all the grumpy people complaining in the comments here, there was a time when Facebook was actually amazing, it helped me make friends with people who otherwise would have just been passing acquaintances and maintain friendships that would have otherwise disappeared. If you were the right age back then it really was great for a bit, it wasn’t quite like the dystopian hell scape it is today.
By the time this was broadcast, I'd already joined and used Facebook, and stopped using it. Still not logged back in to my old abandoned profile since about May 2007.
What is Facebook?
Poisonous
I had an invite to facebook in 2005 and i had to use my uni email to join, I was using Bebo and Faceparty at the time and wrote Facebook off as a cheap imitation😂
The site that was originally for youngsters in college to organize parties and study groups became the place to be for the 50+ demographic to congregate and bicker with each other.
Who knew it would become a place for Karens and Chuds to espouse toxic opinion, sell illegally bred puppies and Dox/shame anyone who irritates them. Oh and your gran to repost photos of someone doing yoga with a nice self helpy platitude over it.
It's incredible how long ago 2007 was. The breakfast couch and studio is memorable but at the same time almost unrecognisable. The same goes for the internet in general.
Get off Facefuck it’s going nowhere.
reupload?
About the time it started becoming a pile of 💩
Im permanently banned from fb for disinformation that is now in the public domain and its true😂
I've given FB a good go on and off since about 2008, but I really fail to see the use of it, what's the point, as this video says lol. You just get angry trolls bashing you for no reason other than to be mean, friend requests from people you don't want to be friends with or fake profiles, and meaningless junk, plus wastes your time needlessly.
I just use it now for being logged into apps and games, that's it.
YouTube can get a bit waste of time and scrolling videos, as well, but it's less fake social.
I wish we could go back to the 90s, and stop right there, tbh.
I deleted my account ages ago, soon after some idiot decided to replace all the useful stuff in my newsfeed with sponsored content, sponsored posts, adverts, pop-ups and posts of whatever meme that some middle-cousin of someone who liked a photo that was tagged by a friend's aunt of me a year ago just released. Then they turned-off in-site messages/chat and tried to force Instagram/Facebook chat down my throat. So, with a main newsfeed that no longer had any actual news about my family and friends and no way to chat or message anyone, I gave up and closed my account about 10 or so years ago and haven't looked back.
The point of Facebook is to sell your time to the advertisers. If you use it, you are the product and you work for free.
Loved by the security services.
So true, Facepuke aka FaceBook is only for people that like to gossip, and lack the basic social standing to use any type of academia beyond that of the womb!
