Friends shocked to learn Princess Diana is dead (Historic 1997 video)

Historic event – The unexpected death of Princess Diana.
Friends playing cards learn that Princess Diana was injured in a car accident, then react when TV news says she has died. I recorded this home video in 1997 and it sat in a box for many years. This is the full, unedited version as I recorded it that night, from the original videotape.

To answer some questions that have popped up – Why was I recording? I was trying out a new camcorder by recording friends playing the card game UNO. We had been having a great time, laughing and joking, for more than an hour when my mom called me to say that Diana was in a car crash and we should turn on the TV. We kept playing UNO and joking around as usual – Ken made fun of how the TV announcer kept repeating himself – and gradually the seriousness of the situation began to sink in. It took a few minutes to transition from our upbeat party mood to serious. When the screen text changed to “Diana dead” the true reality of the situation hit like a ton of bricks and we stopped playing UNO of course, and rushed over to the TV. This was recorded in America, in the state of Iowa. All of the guys in the video are still alive today (as of today, November 20, 2023). The guy who screams when he learns Diana has died is my friend Ken who still lives in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. It is his genuine reaction to the news of Diana’s death. Some people call it a “Wilhelm scream.” (Apparently that’s a movie term). The guy who stifles a smile after Ken’s scream is Scott. (His brief smile was a reaction to Ken’s loud silly scream, NOT to Diana’s death). When CNN announced that Diana had died I didn’t turn the camera back to the TV because my instinct was that it would be more interesting to capture my friends’ reactions. Some people call this video the first of what are now called “reaction” videos, a term that didn’t exist in 1997 (and neither did YouTube, which began in 2005). I don’t think this really is the first “reaction” caught on camera. I mean, there is footage of an announcer reacting to the Hindenburg disaster in 1937, for example, and many others on film. – I keep in touch with all the guys today.

I was trying out a new camcorder by recording friends playing the card game UNO. When my mom called me to say that Diana was in a car crash I turned on the TV, on silent, and we kept playing the game while monitoring the text on the bottom of the TV screen. Thank you very much for recording, preserving and sharing this video. This is a very important historical factor, and very good to preserve. We have very few genuine recordings of people that night, other than those taken by reporters

We were next door eating on the deck with neighbors. Went home to refill drink. Walking back noticed noone on deck BUT plates, silverware, glasses, all still there like a ghost ship. Neighbor would NOT have allowed that! Knew sonething was wrong. Got to backdoor heard cries and looked in saw TV announcement. Joined the rest and we cried like babies the rest of the night.

It was a Sunday morning here in the UK, when we woke up to the terrible news about the loss of Diana. I remember going into the local supermarket to buy a newspaper, and the papers were all showing the headline news of other events. Diana had died after they had gone into print and there was nothing on the news stands about this terrible tragedy. It seemed so surreal. People were talking about what had happened and appeared to be in a state of disbelief. Of course back then, hardly anyone used a mobile phone or read the latest news on a home computer. I had a 7am phone call from a relative to tell me of her death. She was such a famous person world wide. I kept the newspapers from the following days showing the tremendous outpouring of public grief and pictures of the thousands of bouquets of flowers that were placed in her memory in the London parks. Years later, I showed them to my grandson. He was born after her death. He couldn't believe how famous she was and just how loved and respected she had been. He is now 25 and is part of a whole generation of young people who grew up never knowing her. She was such an incredible woman. Even now, I often imagine how different it would have been had she lived and how she would have loved and adored her grand children. Rest in paradise Diana.

Princess Diana was my role model what kind of woman i wanted to become when i was little girl and teen. And when i heard that she was died i cried so much. She was kind, beautiful inside and out, strong and full of compassion.

I went on a trip to Paris a week ago. Our bus drove through the tunnel she died in. Thanks for posting this. I wasn’t alive when it happened but this video makes it feel so real.

I clearly remember the morning I heard she died. Id had a hectic work night accompanying a very entitled super wealthy client to a busy Casino , babysitting him & tolerating his antics til i finally got him packed off to his club about 3am & was exhausted taking a taxi to go pick up my 4yr old from the babysitters when I heard the news.
All of England was sleeping & it was not known yet at that early time. The taxi driver & I just stared at each other in shock. I broke the news to the babysitters household . She didnt believe me & was silent in wide eyed shock until her boyfriend went running to put the TV on & we stood staring at the reporting in disbelief.
I was /am still in Portsmouth UK & always remember driving through the royal docks that morning thinking about Royalty, all she had been through & Dianas dead dreams of ever belonging again.
I felt a terrible empty feeling & I learned a lesson that day about what matters in life.
I took my daughter home & never allowed financial need nor ambition to push me into tolerating the entitled disrespect of upper class fools again.

I couldn't sleep and got up just as CNN was announcing the wreck. Didn't go back to bed. It was so sad to watch as it happened.

I remember this night as well. I had just gotten a PSone and was playing a few games. My mom called and was already crying. I was sitting there asking her what happened and what was wrong and she kept telling me turn on the news RIGHT NOW. My brother came out of his room and his wife at the time, brought out their 6-week old daughter, came out to see me sitting in stunned silence. They asked what was wrong and who I was on the phone with. I pointed at the TV and it showed the same thing you were showing on CNN. Coincidentally, I was also in Iowa when the news broke (Council Bluffs to be exact). This hit hard for a lot of Americans because even though we don't have royalty in the States, we still saw her as OUR Princess becausse she was down to earth and was one of the few souls in this world that didn't deserve what happened to her. 😔
@RickGGb1 July 10, 2024 - 3:28 am
Interesting to see how tv was an actual event and they stopped the game to watch it. Whereas today your friend would all be on the phone and nobody would probably leave that table...
@soysan34 July 10, 2024 - 3:28 am
I still remember it like it was yesterday. I saw the news and laid on living room floor all night to watch it. Stunned doesn't even come close to the emotion i was feeling. Her poor children, and I knew no one in the Palace gave a r@t$ A$$ about her or what her 2 boys were about to endure! This the shuttle diaster and 9/11 were the 3 biggest historical events in my life. I wondered how i was to tell my small children once they arrived home from their dad's. We use to collect postage stamps of her. One of the hardest conversations I ever had with them.
RIP Diane, we loved you!
