Review: Gravitar: Recharged (PlayStation 4/5, Xbox, Switch & Steam) – Defunct Games

by admin

Defunct Games reviews Gravitar: Recharged, available June 2nd on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PC, Mac and Linus.

While the newest Recharged game from Atari may be a deep cut, you shouldn’t hold that against it. Gravitar is a fun shoot ‘em up with a surprising amount of mission types and a tragic backstory that makes it ripe for redemption. The gameplay may take a little getting used to and the aiming could be easier, but once you get the hang of things, you’ll discover an ambitious shooter with a striking art style and a lot of variety. Gravitar is a new high-water mark for the Recharged franchise.

This and asteroids recharged have some of the worst controls Ive seen in a game lately. I don't get how you can like it if you can't shoot anything even though it looks like you are aiming right at it. I can't remember what other games I've played with the gravity mechanic but this is the worst one. trying to navigate a tight corridor while being shot at and having the gravity/momentum pull you every which way is impossible.

This one is a must have for me. I think I would have preferred vector controls but I will happily take any reimagined version of Gravitar.

Has anyone ever play the original arcade version until the gravity reverses? Crazy. 😀

I love Blood 1 & 2 by Monolith I don't know if they're even around any more

Sorry boys, the original crushes this new version.

Brilliant game. It’s so simple but so addictive.
Great clean graphics and atmospheric sounds.
An absolute must buy as a game to have a quick hour blast if you don’t fancy something too heavy.
9/10 for me

Atari should have the guys who made Cycle 28 do a Sinistar: Recharged.

@hughlingard June 26, 2024 - 8:28 pm

it's just too basic to snare my interest. nevertheless, another brilliant review, as always.

Looks pretty underwhelming because…erm…WHERE is the gravity? Most of the gameplay you appear to be floating in space like Asteroids with only the gentlest of pulls towards the planet you're above which is NOT like the original or it's clones were like at all:

Gravitar original: You're fighting gravity every level which makes it hard but fun.
Thrust (C64): Even better, if you leave the ship alone you accelerate towards the surface. Proper gravity effect on show here.
Gravity Crash (PS3): As above, decent gravity effects mean it lives up to it's name.
THIS game: Err….floating around in space more like Asteroids than Gravitar.

They should've marketed it as "Asteroidar" instead – lazy port by the devs imho in which the BASIC mechanics are all wrong in the first place

I'll keep my money until it appears on sale or they re-release Gravity Crash for the PS5 thanks.

Yeah, that ship was making me think Astroids, as well as the UFOs, and then I saw parts that had astroids in them. Hmmmm. 🤔 But does look like a nice shooter, and yeah, background is pretty cool. As for the question, not sure if love is an accurate term, as more like I don't hate it as much as most, maybe because I read the instructions, and I know how to make it easier using the switches on the console, but playing E.T. on my dad's old Atari 2600, I never got the hate that game gets in all honesty. Shoot, putting on easy, and I was able to beat it in just a few minutes. So, guess that would be my answer.

Looks like it's precarious to navigate Kinda cool. Also get the feel of the dam level in TMNT on the NES.

QOTD, apparently Monster Hunter as people keep asking me why i like it.

@JosephCoco June 26, 2024 - 8:28 pm

QotD: I liked Shaq Fu (SNES) as a kid, but everyone else I knew hated it. I doubt I'd still like it. I also liked Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, but didn't learn until I was an adult that everyone hated it.

Awesome video Cyril, I love this recharge from Ataris early days. For me, the Atari was my first console. I’ve been having mega nostalgia for Robotron and Berzerk, I’d really like to see a recharge of one of these games!

QOTD – Mega Man Soccer. That game gets so much hate and I just don't get it. Every time I fire it up I have a good time. It's not the greatest sports game in the world by any stretch of the imagination but it's perfect for that quick pick up and play style arcade sports game that just so happens to include the Mega Man stuff in it too.

I've been playing it all month on the VCS. It's a very cool take on this gravity shooter. 😎

One of best examples of this game style is the game Fly Harder on the Amiga.

@PenguinDT June 26, 2024 - 8:28 pm

This looks like nice, simple take on the original. I love how they went with the calmer aesthetic as opposed to neon-pixel-overload for a change.

QOTD; I guess that would be a tie between retail Duke Nukem Forever or Alone in the Dark 2008. I love how creative AITD got even if many of its systems failed to hit perfectly – and the score is amazing. As for DNF, I guess as a hardcore Duke fanboy who followed the development closely, I knew what kind of train wreck I was getting into. The leaked DNF 2001 beats it silly with its little finger, mind.
