Review: Without Escape (Steam) – Defunct Games

by admin

Defunct Games reviews Without Escape by Bumpy Trail Games, available April 24 on PC, Mac and Linux.

On one hand, I appreciate the work that went into remaking this game for computers. Without Escape looks and plays better than ever, and fans of the game will get a kick out of the brand new graphics. But as a horror-theme point and clicker, this game comes up short. The puzzles are lame, the item placement seems random and all the scary stuff is reserved for the final few moments. I liked it more than Myst, but that’s not saying much.

No, I do not like Myst. I have a couple different versions of it as I thought maybe this version might be better than the last. Nope. All too boring for my taste. I try to like the LucasFilm games like this as well but they are just too tedious for my taste. I'm glad to hear I'm not the only myst detractor. I thought I was just too stupid or something. It turns out I AM TOO STUPID, and others don't like the game!
By the way, I wanted to let you know I crap my pants every time I have to look for new batteries in my house. You just never know what they're going to do to when you open that drawer or cupboard or oven. Don't you keep your AAs in the oven?

Ugh, I hated Myst and it was on EVERYTHING. Having played Shadowgate and Lucasarts games as some of my first point and clickers I thought it was boring and had a real non-atmosphere. Myst and Magic Carpet went together like pee pee and doo doo.

I hated Myst. I remember I was on a vacation with my family when I was 11 and we stopped to visit friends. I was so excited to see they had a computer they said I could play games on but Myst was the only one they had. Hearing it was an adventure game made me think of the LucasArts or even Sierra games I was used to. But instead it was boring and nothing made sense to me.

I know it's a cliche you hate, but it really feels like you played this so we don't have to.

I haven't played Myst. I'm not a point and click fan.

I never was the biggest fan of Myst as a game, but as a work of digital art. The soundtracks alone made the games worth at least trying (or getting the soundtrack CDs for). And when you play them back to back, it almost like watching digital rendering evolve in front of your eyes – from re-rendered FMVs to real-time 3D accelerated rendering. Wow, typing that made me feel really old all of a sudden.

When it comes to these pre-rendered point-and-click puzzlers, I was more into 7th Guest – but I don't think that has aged as gracefully. However, much like with Myst, the 7th Guest soundtrack is pure gold still.
