What Makes Calvin Candie One Of The Most Terrifying Villains In Film History

For decades, Quentin Tarantino has crafted some of the most ruthless villains in film history. The evil that dwells within these characters can truly be felt by audiences with every line they speak. But it wasn’t until Django Unchained that Tarantino created a villain so horrible, that it him uncomfortable. Played by Leonardo DiCaprio, Calvin Candie in Django Unchained will forever be one of the most reprehensible characters ever put to film. And DiCaprio’s performance in Django Unchained truly sells the horrific qualities of Calvin Candie.

Which villain should we cover next?

Tarantino's over the top depiction of slavery tells us more about the institution than any depiction of the average day on a plantation ever could.

The horror of being a slave is not that you're horrifically abused every day, it's that you live your whole life knowing that at any moment you can be beaten, abused, or killed and there's nothing you can do about it.

It's similar to the horror of living in a dictatorship. Both derive their dreadful circumstances from an absolute monopoly of violence belonging to an entirely unaccountable, unrestrained force.

Calvin Candy is scary because he does not care about the things he does to slaves. To him it's nothing more than killing someone in a video game is to us. And that apathy implies a lack of restraint, that there's nothing keeping him from killing you if he wants to, and that you're only alive so far because the thought to kill you hasn't crossed his mind.

Calvin Candy was awful racist person but the true devil was Stephen.

hard to watch ? What kind of soft skin say that about a movie, what happen to your mind if you see something fuck up in real out fall in trauma ?

The matched partnerships of the heroes and the antagonists is so perfect. Calvin and Stephen are the evil mirrors for Schultz and Django.

I dont see why you would write this if it made you "uncomfortable." You clearly wanted to make a period piece about pre civil war south and do what you felt was an accurate depiction. It was probably a good guess at some mindset and sociopathic tendencies of slave owners.

What i don't think a lot of people realize was Calvin js not a unique case he wasn one slaver woth a sadistic mind he was one in 100s of men and women whk were just a sadistic

Slaver owner never saw there slave as people they were propertythat they could do as please.

Horse, Dog and other aninmals lifes were of more thanvaule.

Did a family history test a while back and found out my ancestors were slaves. They were kidnapped from Egypt and taken to a plantations America.

Calvin Candie was not a villain, he was a business man who two men tried to take advantage of and commit fraud
@austinhuber3131 June 15, 2024 - 8:33 pm
Yeah, he's definitely a despicable piece of shit but not the least bit scary. Nobody checks under their pillow for fucking Calvin Candy. But yeah, we see you, you're all so very racially sensitive for pretending to be scared by him, here's your medal, you stopped all racism: 🎖️🎖️🎖️
@carrisebear3499 June 15, 2024 - 8:33 pm
He was pretty freaking great in Gilbert Grape and Basketball Diaries. He has always exhibited incredible range.
@-elijahriggs- June 15, 2024 - 8:33 pm

@Ryl3925 June 15, 2024 - 8:33 pm

New to the channel, and I'm digging it. I am one of these people, though...
5:33 "sycophant" doesn't have that preceding second 'N.'
Sorry, it's just that I always get taken out of shit when that happens, long enough to write this comment.
For real though, I dig the channel.

@georged7059 June 15, 2024 - 8:33 pm
Hearing the Roman emperor comparison I genuinely believe Leo could play a very convincing Caligula
@JohnMisdreavous June 15, 2024 - 8:33 pm
Not nearly one of the most terrifying villains in film history
@justadrum June 15, 2024 - 8:33 pm
I was in film school when I got my hands on a copy of this script; probably 2-3 years before the it came out. I heard Leo and Jamie were set to play characters but I didn’t know which ones.

When I finally seen it, it didn’t disappoint at all. Brilliant work for Tarantino and team. Definitely a classic ❤💯
@mokinsen June 15, 2024 - 8:33 pm
He kind of reminds me of Amon Göth from Schindler's List
@syn1183 June 15, 2024 - 8:33 pm
Boohoo pu*****. This kind of stuff has been going on for centurie. Did everyone forget about the Roman colosseum?
@jekw23 June 15, 2024 - 8:33 pm
I love how he just barely contains how much of a psychopath he is. You’re just waiting for him to explode, you just don’t know when
