Habit is not the same as discipline. If something's a habit, it requires minimal discipline (eg. brushing your teeth). Discipline is what you use when motivation fails you. Motivation comes and goes, so when one's unmotivated, he uses discipline to adhere to his plan anyway. When there's no motivation at all to stick to a plan, discipline by itself cannot get someone through it, because it's self depleting, there's a limited amount and everybody has a breaking point when their discipline fails them. An ideal scenario is to reach the point when adhering to the plan becomes a habit, then it's way easier and at that point you need much less discipline for it.
