Review: Wild Dogs (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch & Steam) – Defunct Games

by admin

Defunct Games reviews Wild Dogs, available now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch and PC.

Wild Dogs is the Contra sequel we should have got decades ago. This brand-new action game takes the run ‘n gun genre to the next level with inventive level designs, fantastic bosses and a varied story that isn’t afraid to jump between genres at a moment’s notice. While derivative in places, the final two stages of this game are among the most fun and exciting moments I’ve ever had in a run ‘n gun shooter. Wild Dogs is not just another throwback game, because it’s right up there with Contra III and Gunstar Heroes as one of the genre’s very best.

Hey! I'm making a review for this as well, and although I did refer to it as similar to Contra, as I am playing the ported collection on ps4… I was wondering if I could add the clip of your more direct comparison and shout out your channel as well. If not that's okay but wanted to ask first!

@Wolfdragon92584 June 3, 2024 - 3:16 am

I was just gonna comment it reminds me of Operation C, but you include that in the opening footage. Nice!!! And it's only 10 bux!!!!

@richardfan7157 June 3, 2024 - 3:16 am

Great review! If you're looking for another good throwback shooter, there's Deathwish Enforcers which is pretty much Sunset Riders meets Dirty Harry.

Oh hell yeah this is what I'm talking about after I seen this review I have to run by this game I'm actually around pay full price for it not even wait for sale and not even wait for sale

For today's question, I am pretty partial to the original 3 Contra games as they appeared on NES and GameBoy. I guess the arcade too, since that's where they originated, but it's really those first 3 console versions I like best. Still did not play my way through Contra III or Rebirth yet. They may change my mind.

I have a question about this game: is there a difficulty level with one-hit deaths? Doesn't seem very Contra to give you a life bar.

So, Teddy does more than just make Tag Team Matches, Playa or people go One on One with The Undertaker, huh? 😉😂🤣 When I heard that name, couldn't resist the wrestling reference. Still, seeing this, and yeah, Contra was the first thing to come to mind, glad to hear it is fun too. As for the question, there is one game on MAME I liked, had to double check the title, but Time Soldiers. It was pretty fun, so think I'll have that be my answer.

This looks awesome!!! – QOTD – I gotta go with Contra 3 for SNES. I'm sorry if I wasn't allowed to say this one. I had a screaming baby in my ear by the time i made to the QOTD section lol. Parenting lol

@steelcurtain187 June 3, 2024 - 3:16 am

Holy cow this looks sweet

@DJDanceClassic June 3, 2024 - 3:16 am

I am poor, where can i download the PC iso?

@cyberpunknut1099 June 3, 2024 - 3:16 am

Dang, this looks even more contra-like than blazing chrome.

QOTD: Gunstar heroes of course. I was on that bandwagon early.

This game is right up my alley, I will most likely buy it. That being said, I remember seeing it in the PSN store and scrolled right past it, because the 'cover art' looks like much of the generic shovel-ware on the PSN store. I feel compelled to share that I think the cover art was a misstep. If the youtube algo didn't put this video on my front page, I would have never even have known about it.

@contrabandresearch8409 June 3, 2024 - 3:16 am

Tons of great run n guns, so this time I'll say Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project which sadly might be the last great Duke Nukem game.

@buttkick22 June 3, 2024 - 3:16 am

QOTD is super hard and I notice a lot of people naming the same games I would. So I’ll go with the last one that blew me away. VALFARIS! It’s sooo metallllll 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻

@dp1516 June 3, 2024 - 3:16 am

Lots of fun stuff this month. Are you going to review Deathwish Enforcers as well? :). While it isn't nearly as great as Sunset Riders. I really had fun with that game this week.

@GaggleofDoozies June 3, 2024 - 3:16 am

Oooooooh gotta get this!!👍
Hopefully one of these indie companies pick up the physical license.

@CeruleanChurch June 3, 2024 - 3:16 am

This game looks like a ton of fun and I will definitrly need to check it out.
Gunstar Heroes is easily the gold standard and my favourite of any run and gun game. No contest.

@melvinblackburn195 June 3, 2024 - 3:16 am

Great review!! I will be checking this one out. As for my favorite Side-Scrolling Run & Gun, I always come back to the original Metal Slug Vehicle 001. My favorite of all-time is of the top-down variety. It's called Shock Troopers and I play it almost weekly.

@mattb8075 June 3, 2024 - 3:16 am

I played this last week, it's a surprisingly fun game.

QOTD: I wouldn't say it's my favorite run n gun shooter, I am going to cheat a bit. But it's one I have played a lot, and really enjoy. I want to mention it to put a spotlight on it because it's an indie project: Super Cyborg. It's a run n gun on Steam with native Online Multiplayer (before remote olay even existed) and it works and plays excellently for what it is. Great music, good graphics, tight and precise gameplay. Only knock is that it's derivative, but it has lots of its own ideas too. If you haven't played it, definitely do. It's only $5 and it's a riot. You should review it! Damn hard though.

@dylan.t180 June 3, 2024 - 3:16 am

Awesome

@HybridAngelZero June 3, 2024 - 3:16 am

In my humble opinion, run n' guns like this are timeless fun.

As for my fave, definitely Gunstar Super Heroes on GBA.
It's a ton of fun, I love all the classic Sega references, and it is absolutely nuts what it manages to pull off with the hardware

@PenguinDT June 3, 2024 - 3:16 am

Another interesting shooter to put into my backlog, thank you! There have been several really good ones recently – so many it doesn't matter Konami is in sleepwalking mode.

QOTD; Since I don't want to self promote, I'll go with Rive, a fantastic shooter with heart and excellent gameplay. And naturally Abuse – the best PC side scrolling shooter ever made with the worst name imaginable for 2020s google searches. It used to have tons of user made content back in the day, but only thing searching 'abuse maps' gives these days is depression.
