Also I dont hate Left 4 Dead lol
It was that aspect of the community that brought the horror aspect of ZP:S to life.
Like I said, ZP:S is nowhere near what it was - game play changes over the past 3-5 years or so have substantially eroded the player base, and you're lucky to find a decent server at all these days, but at its peak I feel ZP:S was not only one of the best Source mods, but one of the best zombie games available.
That aside, to further clarify the zombie game play; yes, your objective regardless of game mode was to kill survivors, but zombies had regenerating health, night vision, a 'lunge' attack that gave them a burst of speed over a short distance (an ability that could be refilled by attacking survivors), and a single special zombie called The Carrier could infect survivor players, causing them to transform into a zombie over time.
That ability in particular lent a whole to layer of depth to the game play on both sides, as survivors could never truly trust each other, and the zombies could strategize with and around the infected to best take out the survivor team from within.
im now convinced that YouTube listens to hou
Contagion is really awesome, I was hoping they would have a sequel in the works but it seems they are focusing on VR
Edit: Also, sucks that NMRiH 2 didn't come out on the day you released this! I'm hoping we see it this year in some form. I followed the original from 2005 and loved it but it was quite jank.
However, I would like to express some disagreement with you regarding No More Room in Hell, especially when refering to the melee combat.
Its true that the system it uses from games like Chivalry of swing arcs of damage can be somewhat innacurate, especially considering that you have to pair that with moving zombie's head hitboxes. Besides, the game doesn't make any in depth tutorial on how the melee mechanics works, which means that it is up to the player to play long enough to figure out them, or they have learn them through another player/a guide.
I wouldn't call the system janky or bad by any means, its trying to make the melee combat as challenging and difficult as the rest of aspects of the game, especially since proficient melee usage can be incredibly powerful alone for completing most sections or even complete maps in the game.
Your melee weapons in this game have different damage thresholds for charged and light attacks, with 14 out of the 16 proper melee weapons being able to one-hit kill zombies with enough charge time, they have different swing arcs and attack delays to separate them from each other. They have different ranges from where they can land a hit, as well as different stamina costs and even in the worst cases the game pairs this with a shoving mechanic that can help you when failures or the rare incosistency of the system happens in melee combat.
Its a hard system to learn and very hard to teach without lots of direct practice with every single weapon you wish to learn, but from the 9 years that I've played the game, I've seen many people besides myself starting from zero where we struggled to kill any zombie reliably with almost any melee until we eventually became extremely consistent even with the weakest of them.
I can't agree with it being a bad system that doesn't work properly, it simply has a steep learning curve due to all the variables you need to take into account, musle memory, variety of melee weapons and fighting situations.
So, if anyone takes the time to read through this comentary, I believe that calificating the melee in this game as "bad", "janky" and "unreliable" is a misleading statement that hints at the system not working properly, as well as not being worth interacting with (which is one of the worst ways to approach this game, since not being proficient with at least some melee weapons leaves players extremely vulnerable and almost forces them to play with way more experienced teammates that can protect and bodyguard them in order to have any chance of completing maps or simply having a good time).
The melee in No More Room in Hell is a core mechanic to the game, but also a challenging one to dominate that requieres a somewhat substancial time investment and lots of practice depending on how good you wanna become at it, that's general to most ot the rest of the game really. If you're someone who doesn't like games that ask for this much investement and you're looking for a game that's easier to grab (which is completly fine), this video thankfully gives a lot of alternatives.
If you took the time to read until the end, thank you.
Sometime after I got the ORange Box and Garrys mod and such, I played ALOT of the zombie stuff in garrys mod and Counter strike source. It was a huge time sink for me.
Glad I found this video.
It was basically all I would do, come home from school, boot up teamspeak and Gmod, then get to work 24/7 with a resupply
It amazed me when I came back to zombie survival out of curiosity a couple months ago, and the SAME community (by name) was still there (though likely every single person of the staff and ownership has changed)
And it's still just as fun as it was before. Impressive
