Review: When the Past Was Around (Steam) – Defunct Games

Defunct Games reviews When the Past Was Around by Mojiken Studio, available now on PC and Mac. Coming soon for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Switch.

Although it’s an emotional roller coaster from beginning to end, When the Past Was Around is exactly the kind of game we need right now. The heartbreaking story of loss and letting go is especially cogent in a year like 2020. While the puzzles are occasionally nonsensical and the adventure is on the easy side, this stylish point and clicker’s message will stick with you long after the game is over. From the hand-drawn graphics to the catchy music to the wonderfully diverse stages, When the Past Was Around is a game you won’t soon forget.

I just beat the game a few minutes before watching this video, and loved it a lot. Both the video and the game

Found out about this game recently and I have fallen in love with it. I've bought it and will play through and experience it together with my girlfriend for the first time soon. Despite that it's already become one of my favourite games of all time.

Don't want to come across like a jerk, but I had to stop watching after the second time you showed the solution to a puzzle. Might be in the minority but I don't like seeing solutions to a puzzle in a review.

Otherwise, I really enjoyed your review 👍

QOTD - GRIS. to anyone who hasn't tried it, i highly recommend this game. its a short but poignant game, adding a lot of the colour this year lacked for me. played it on PS4, can't wait to try it out on my switch as well.

Those questionable decision making puzzles are THE reason why I typically avoid these types of games. Do you think knowing that that I should still give it a try?

Any Arkham game makes me feel good when things aren't. Something about how they did such a good job at making you feel like you ARE Batman, and the action is so good. Perfect for making me feel better.

Looks cool. Art style is really eye catching. Looks like the cover of a book.

QOTD, Monster Hunter world. It's kept me entertained and happy during a screwy 2020 and even before that. Easily my favorite game this generation.

I'm a big fan of this type of art style. Although the game style might not be my cup of tea, theres a certain quaint charm to it.

Well, I'm always up for a good point and click puzzler, and good story, totally have to check this out. As for the question, it may be cathartic, but in a different kind of way. And kinda a toss up, but still designed by the same guy Al Lowe, and that being the Leisure Suit Larry series and Freddy Pharkas Frontier Pharmacist. They are cathartic through laughter. Even when I'm not in the greatest of moods, and end up dying on the game, the stuff they have them say, gets a chuckle out of me.

QOTD: I really think Eurotruck Simulator 2 and American Truck Simulator might be the most cathartic games I've ever played. Does that make me strange...?

Don't know if I understood qotd correctly. But I will answer anyway some Nintendo games like Mario&Luigi(RPG similar to Paper Mario) games, Kirby and sometimes Yakuza games especially sub stories make me feel better. it's weird combination, lol
