jMonkeyEngine — The Others Game Engine Series

Welcome to the second chapter in the Others, a look at the less common 3D game engines available. Today we are looking at jMonkeyEngine, an open source Java based game engine.

It can be downloaded at:

Underrated Engine. Seriously people need to be aware of this Engine because i believe it has full potential. I'm currently using it for my current Game and its very easy to use and it gives me a fast workflow! :)

Excuse me, can I borrow some of your videos to make my video

Great JME intro. Folks, If you're really gonna get into Java 3D development, do yourself a favor and learn to do your modeling in and import from, Blender. Blender may seem overwhelming at first, but its free, has a HUGE community and is actively developed. p.s. their is no shame in doing 3D dev in Java. 🙂

this engine is the bomb !
@ArmagdoGaming May 9, 2024 - 11:23 am
I find it a little sad that the only game mentioned in this video is being remade/re-written in Unity.

Business Opportunity in Ruvol

I have invented a Board Game [still unpublished and not yet out in the market] that I believe is guaranteed to be as challenging and exciting as CHESS. I called it “RUVOL.”

It is my hope that one day Ruvol may surpass chess as the “Number One Board Game in the World.”

The weakness of chess is it always starts in fixed positions that the opening moves become “memorizable.” In fact, not a few have so mastered the moves that they can play against their opponents “blindfolded.” It is for this very reason that the great Bobby Fischer introduced his so-called “Fischer Random Chess,” where the starting position of the pieces is “randomized” to make the memorization of openings impracticable. Fortunately, it is also for this reason that I invented Ruvol where “every game” has been calculated to be a challenging one to play.

HOW IS RUVOL PLAYED and HOW YOU CAN MONETIZE IT?

I detailed everything in my YouTube video. Here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcqth0m3-R0

BIG MONEY POTENTIAL IN RUVOL!

It is worthwhile to note that the people who play chess will be the same people who will play Ruvol. In my Google search, I learned there are around 800 million chess players in the world. Even just a small percentage of these 800 million is good enough to earn big money from Ruvol either as an ONLINE GAME BUSINESS or as a PHYSICAL PRODUCT DISTRIBUTOR.

You may contact me at: rodolfovitangcol@gmail.com.

Thanks and God bless!

I really don't understand Java programmers. Use the right tool for the job, Java makes sense for enterprise web applications....I guess. I would think GC would be DOA for any serious game developer.
@Dude_Slick May 9, 2024 - 11:23 am
It's been a while since I messed with JMonkey. I didn't know it was still an active project. I always lived the JM terrain editor. It is so easy and intuitive.
@billycrooks8401 May 9, 2024 - 11:23 am
Have you got any videos of your own game projects?
@greenheart5334 May 9, 2024 - 11:23 am
After making better 3D game using libGDX than most people make using Unity i won't rather go into Unity. Especially it's commercial. I liked using Java for gamedev, the paradox is that people believe using better engine allows to make better game. It doesn't.

How can i change the jme language?
@caglnoah May 9, 2024 - 11:23 am
2:25 tryna throw shade at eclipse i had to click away
@Lizard_geek May 9, 2024 - 11:23 am
When I right click on the scene asset folder and click new it doesn't give me an option for new scene.

Edit: Never mind figured it out.

Can you please do a step by step tutorial SERIES on this engine? I really thing Jmonkey has potential but there are no good videos on using it.
@BrandonS-lk2qc May 9, 2024 - 11:23 am
Love this series! I like the underdogs, and this is a great way to see them all in action! It seems like development on the engine has slowed. Or, at least, the PACE of development has. I've been tracking it for a while and it seems that after the 3.0 release things have kind of ground to a halt. Any thoughts on this?
@austinedeclan10 May 9, 2024 - 11:23 am
Minimum hardware specifications requirements ?
@qolstanczyk7333 May 9, 2024 - 11:23 am
Yeah, everyone is worried about the mention of Java. Only successful game I know of programmed with Java is Minecraft and the new project Notch is working on. He's a genius with Java, but it still can't be that bad to make a good game.
@MR3DDev May 9, 2024 - 11:23 am
Wow had no idea there are these many engines out there
@batwimp May 9, 2024 - 11:23 am
Why is the player walking so slowly?
@igorthelight May 9, 2024 - 11:23 am
Isn't it a bad idea to use Java for game engine? It runs in a virtual machine and it is much slower not only tnen C++, but even C#.
@flamendless May 9, 2024 - 11:23 am
This or godot or unity?
@jonathancamarena3117 May 9, 2024 - 11:23 am
I actually really like jmonkey but haven't had a reason to transfer over from libgdx - and with godot 3 being out now its making it even less likely.
@HE360_Games May 9, 2024 - 11:23 am
Great video!!! I remember when I tried this engine a few years back. I don't know how much they've changed this engine since I used it. But mannnn, I TRULY TRULY TRULY wanted this engine to work for me because I come from a Java game development background and it would have been GREAT to have a 3D Java game engine/library to work with. But, when I tried this engine, I ran into a few l limitations that was prebuilt into the coding of this engine to where I could only do what was already programmed into this engine. For example, I wanted to change the control scheme in my game. But, I couldn't (or at least it was SUPER difficult) because the maker of this JMonkeyEngine already had prebuilt in controls. I tried hours and hours and hours and hours to try to get out of what they already had. But couldn't. I also tried to sift through some their documentation on how changing the control schemes could be done and I tried their examples. But, no luck. So, I had to use what THEY already had. This is just one example. Again, I don't know how much they've changed this engine and I don't know if it was just my luck or what.But, above is among some of the problems that I ran into when working with this engine. And it MIGHT be something that one MIGHT encounter with this. Thus, I just thought I'd share my experience with this. And I hope that this makes sense.
@makanansari144 May 9, 2024 - 11:23 am
Love it! here is an idea how about listing some good game engines that can run on Linux without any problem! I had tough time installing Unity on Ubuntu Studio! very buggy and slow! I bet Godot runs pretty good.
@VideaVice25 May 9, 2024 - 11:23 am
AAAAARRRRGH, you lost me at Java
@D0NU75 May 9, 2024 - 11:23 am
it really bugs me you constantly have to struggle with the interface tho, specially the part where the scene might not save, after a while of working you might actually forget the workaround for that, think you saved and then you later discover it didn't do it
@omi6816 May 9, 2024 - 11:23 am
Godot vs jmonkey, which one would you choose?
@sebastianwardana1527 May 9, 2024 - 11:23 am
I have jmonkey engine installed, but i never realised its power... this format does a very good job!
@Dude_Slick May 9, 2024 - 11:23 am
One thing I have to say is, when it's working, JMonkey terrain editor is one of my favorite.
@DxTrixterz May 9, 2024 - 11:23 am
Judging from your demonstrations I'm wondering can you LITERALLY use every game engine?
@youreperfectstudio7931 May 9, 2024 - 11:23 am
BSD license is basically "you can do anything you want with it other than sue us". I'm a big fan of this license.

Good overview! I've heard good things about jMonkey and seem some good demos before. I'm digging this series of videos!
