Scene takes to the streets of London, to find out how youth subcultures like punks, goths, rudies, skinheads and new romantics dress to express their outsider status. Should the way they dress really elicit such negative reactions from employers, pub landlords and the more conventionally-attired members of the population? Or should we all learn to be a bit more tolerant?

punk had been over 5 years by now, living in a time warp
The last comment sums up the entire reason the identity shock culture exists
Nowadays you go into a pub in London in a suit you’d be kicked out. But dressed in what these guys had you’d be a ‘normy’ 😂
When he says get this they think we cause trouble
He looks like sting 🤣
Swear one of them sits on Camden Bridge these days charging £2 for a photo to 'get a punk drunk'
😂
Wow. The youth was as dumb downed and stupid in 1983 as they are today.
They need “professional” advice on whether to wear a tie or a pair of socks with their shoes 😂😂😂😂

I miss the punk, skins , teds, scooter boys and all the rest. Nowadays we just have bent neck vapers in hoodies. Glad I grew up in the 70's and 80's
1:40 she can get away with any look because attractive
Fat Goth men who are balding 😂😂
I was a “new romantic “ back in the early 80’s it was the best of times 🎉
Stand out .. be proud! ❤
😢😢😢
Probably quite a few will be accountants now
I have noticed that those who develop their own style of how they dress and look are more intelligent and interesting than those who wear whatever is in fashion. They read fashion magazines to help them choose what they should be wearing this year. They don't seem to have the imagination or nerve to dress according to their own personality they give in to peer pressure through fear of what other people might say or think about them if they don't look like the majority of people out and about in public.
Im not bothered by goth at all unless its satanic
I was still at school got suspended for havin a mohikan n refusing to cut it off😂😂😂
“Banned from school for orange hair” reminds me of in the 90s at secondary school a kid being put on suspension and then in isolation for having a pattern shaved into his head. The style didn’t affect his education but the attitude of he must be suspended and then isolated would have. I was born early 80s so have s few memories of people sporting alternative styles. I remember locally one guy who had the most fantastic neon Green Mohawk. As for me I’ve been neon pink, pillar box red and all sorts in between 😅
standing out to fit in
Being into Spear of Destiny was my 'thing' that meant I wasn't one of the casuals or townies as they are affectionally called. It really was a special time for me. The other night around a mate's house listening to the (NOW) music compilation hits. About half way thru, 'Do you believe in the Western World started to slowly build up. We had been drinking lager, too. It really did bring back the memories and how my mate was more 'into' the majority of the hits on there…
It's hilarious how the think they are unique and "stand out" but all look the same.
How is miss the 80's – the golden decade. London was the most exiting place that time.
SHE LOOKS ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL WITH HER NEW HAIR STYLE N MAKEUP ABSOLUTELY STUNNING YOUNG LADY 100%✌🏻❤️❤️✌🏻🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
It's funny innit because this is kinda 5 years AFTER the punk movement exploded.. A movement that embodied being individual.. By the early 80s it was a uniform..
Punks=Drop out art students😅
I was born in 1983 so missed this 😢but my mother in law was a full on punk in the 80s and still is to this day 😂😂😂
"Shame on you the way you dress , your clothes are Punk , your shoes are Ted , Your hair is Natty Dread . " Polly Styrene .
"Grey will never go out of fashion , cos it's never been in fashion ." Tango advert .🤣
Peer pressure in action
When my daughter went off to uni and the last picture was of us looking into the lift's mirrors while we headed down from the hotel room to the car to drive her to the uni halls. She showed the picture to her new friends and they said they thought I was cool as their parents dressed like average people. She showed the same picture to her first boyfriend and he was literally terrified of meeting me for the first time.
The photo in question is of petite 5ft girl standing next to a 50 year old 6ft tall, brickouthouse sized guy with long blond hair, dressed in black wearing a Slayer shirt, a Motorhead tattoo on his arm, while grinning like a maniac and showing the devil horns with his hand! LOL!
I work in an office, so I still dress all in black but wear a black formal shirt, black trousers and smart black shoes always polished, I always shave as I hate beards and I always keep my hair tied back. My company expects a minimum dress standard and as they're paying me to work in their place of business. Other people turn up to the office in shirts and jeans and I don't think that's right, you're there to work and dressing the part puts you in a work frame of mind. I might listen to extreme music that could curdle milk but that's not a reflection on my skills and abilities and it should not reflect in my ability to do the work my employer pays me to do.
I was born in 1983. My parents have a photograph of a bunch of Punks holding me when i was about 3 months old and 1 of them has a knife and fork to my head 😂
