Since retiring I tend to shop little and often and consequently being able to be dealt with in a couple of minutes without queuing is appealing. Okay so it's saving the supermarket money but it's saving me time as well so I personally would not get sniffy about it. Also the self-service till it doesn't insist on calling me my love or my dear or similar inappropriate terms .However if I see an empty till on the way to the self service I will often use it and I'm amazed how in general the operators manage to remain cheerful and friendly after having dealt with with so many dozens of customers already on their shift .
I always avoid self service, even though the supermarkets are pushing for them ,especially card only. The tesco near me have several self serv but only two thet you can pay with cash even though all of them are capable of accepting bogh types of payment. I always go to the staffed checkout and pay by cash.
At my local supermarket (Sainsburys) who has a monopoly has they are the only one in the town the nearest other supermarkets is about 2 miles away on a useless Khan bus service their just recently refurbished the store and got rid of about 12 checkouts that was never open and replaced them this self service which half of them never open and only three staffed checkouts which is only open less then 5% of the time but when they are I will use them but otherwise got no choice but to use the self service tills but take my time in packing my bags to try and cause a backlog if anyone done that and other customers started complaining to the management their would start to wake up and start putting staff back on the tills or organise a mass walkout by go to the self service checkouts and scanning your shopping and just walk out the store leaving the shopping at the checkout.
The other supermarket (Aldi) in the other town has self service but you are limited to 20 items and have increased the number of staffed checkouts.
I only use a self service if I have a couple of items and there is a queue at the manned checkout. Even then they are a pain as so many items need staff authentication. Can't buy aerosols, razors or even a can of Red Bull without it.
I did once take home some cheese that I forgot to pay for. I rang them back to apologise and pay for the cheese. I got thanked for my honesty and was told that I could keep it.
But now the local Tesco mainly use self service tills that only take card payments. I use cash on principal so have to queue at the cigarette counter to pay for it. Just recently that store has locked the back doors to the store because of shoplifters so I won't be using it. That is where I would go to wait for a taxi home.
We pay their wages. What will they all do when this so-called ‘tech’ fills their jobs?
Just don’t use the self service! Whatever we tolerate, they’ll go for more!
Never use self checkout. Why would anyone consent to being part of the social credit system rollout?
They got new ai cameras everywhere in asda its ridiculous. And i have not given them permision to scan me and sell all my data. Feels like you are going into a prision. Dont like it dont want it looks like shopping elsewhere.
Fujitsu are a good example of high security via post office 😩😩😩😩
It's amazing how much the supermarkets will pay for cutting edge technology in order not to pay a checkout operator.
unfortunately checkout staff do not just pass the time of the day they have conversations so annoying when you just want to get out of the store, if it as an older person I understand as possibly the only person they will speak to no problem but talking about their great social life annoying
I usually go to a cashier and pay using cash. I hate Self check out. xx
So easy to go undetected do what i do put sunglasses on!
Self checkouts are the most abused systems i’ve seen. Maybe supermarkets are being funded by the government for the losses. Of course there is no data available but i bet the losses are big.
I wonder if employing more check out staff would work out cheaper.
Supermarket worker here. It's too late people… we've ALL allowed it to happen. People have allowed themselves to be unpatient, arrogant and rude. It's too convenient to just go in and get shopping. Days of checkouts are gone. It'll be the shelf stackers next… personally I can't wait get me a nice redundancy.
I absolutely refuse to use them , never use supermarkets .
Even on self check out, they have staff standing there to help you if you get it wrong
The big supermarkets have forgotten one thing where the customers it’s our money. If we boycott a shop it closes
I refuse to go to self checkouts. If there’s nobody there I won’t go I will leave the shopping in the basket.
Fantastic way to criminalise people who make a mistake.
As usual tech companies makeing a fortune making supplying and servicing these things .And there will be a monthly servicing charge
Our local busiest supermarket (name withheld) has increased its self-scan staff by 25% because of troublesome customers. (So at PEAK/busiest times, that's only a loss of 11 checkout staff jobs over the last few years.)
I personally would welcome A.I. enabling stores and even small shops TO BAN SHOPLIFTERS COMPLETELY. Have it so that as soon as a known shoplifter sticks their head in the store, security asks them to leave.
(Known shoplifters will have to shop online (paying for their goods before they're even dispatched) and get home delivery.)
I cant use self-serve simply because they start to malfunction if I even walk past them!! Why do we do it to ourselves?A techno- nightmare of our own creation.
Next you'll be moaning about how expensive everything is getting. If they bring back loads more staff on the tills the extra wages will go on the cost of food etc. As for cameras, they wouldn't be getting them if people weren't nicking so much stuff. Again the price of theft goes on your tab.
