Review: Asteroids: Recharged (PlayStation 4/5, Switch, Xbox & Steam) – Defunct Games

Defunct Games reviews Asteroids: Recharged by Atari, available December 14 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, Switch and PC.

While longtime fans of Asteroids will find a lot of nostalgia in this Recharged sequel, new players may be bored with the slow pacing and frustrating gameplay. Even with the addition of power-ups and Recharged trappings, the monotonous structure keeps this from hitting the same heights as Centipede or even Black Widow. Worst of all, the always trusty challenge mode only helps to highlight the inherent shallowness of this concept. Asteroids: Recharged is a big disappointment.

Sadly to what i see it is just another half baked remake on laughable dev hardware.

My problem with this is they're selling it piecemeal. I want to pay one price for all of them together in one spot. I also want it physical because I hate digital only glorified rentals.

Thanks for the review. You saved me several dollars. Definitely not buying this game.

The look of this game is so sexy. It's $5 right now and for that I'll bite.

The major problem with a game like this is that the concept has been around for so long, other game developers have had time to take in what they love about it and make vast improvements.
Nova Drift being the most recent example I've seen. It plays a bit differently of course but there are hundreds of ship mods and the enemies engage you. I wildly more enjoyable experience.

All well and good, and might be fun to revisit the game after so long. This review had me wondering though, why there isn't a full 3D version of the game with modern textures. It would be challenging to play, as you could spin, vector and thrust your ship a full 360 degrees, which means you'd probably need some sort of creative mini map or threat indicator, but I'd actually want to try that.

All of these "Recharged" games suck. They suck like a Dyson vacuum cleaner. They blow like a 215 cfm leaf blower. The only one that's half decent is Missile Command. At least on that game when you upgrade your silos the upgrade sticks with you and doesn't disappear after 2 seconds before you can even use it. Yeah, I bought Black Widow on day one, and was sorry I did 30 seconds after firing it up for the first time. That was enough to turn me off to the entire series.

As a Babylon 5 Fan I love the Newtonian Physics model even more.
But to be honest I actually adore Minestorm on the Vectrex even more that Asteroids..

I agree they could mix up the colours more and also perhaps take some tip from some of the Pacman Championship games - for example give your ship an energy ram and make it crash into the asteroids to destroy them as a change to game play. Or make it so you ship only shoots out the back but that the front of the ship bounces off if it hits an asteroid - that sort of thing.

I really hope some one does something Championship style with an oldfashioned Maze game, the likes of Ladybug, Mouse Trap, Clean Sweep and so on would be so well suited to that - and I kinda wished that Bandai Namco would buy up the rights to all the old Exidy and so one stuff and add it to their own Pacman series.

It's so much stupid fun. I often find myself getting tired of all these AAA games. Where I have to do a bunch of shit. And still find the time for it and balance life. It's fun to just do some stupid fun arcade games from my childhood. I'll have to check out them other two you mentioned. It's cool just trying to get a higher score. Like the good old days.

How about Berzerk Recharged.
@Retrosys April 26, 2024 - 9:53 pm
My issue with these recharged games is that if you’ve played one, you’ve played them all. The only thing that really changes are the controls. Power ups are all the same or similar in each game, and the look is uniform across the board which is fine, but it all feels so… samey. You get one life to get the highest score you can which is not how the arcade games were.

People interested in this should absolutely check out Cycle 28 on the Switch eShop. One of my favorites.

Is this also available on Atari's tragically overpriced VCS?
@tonybarnes2920 April 26, 2024 - 9:53 pm
Gyruss, Vanguard, Congo Bongo and Crystal Castles. I actually talked to Atari about doing a new Crystal Castles, myself, but ultimately ended up doing my own original IP that's a combo of Marble Madness, deBlob and Crystal Castles.... but I digress... yeah, I'd LOVE to see a new Gyruss or Vanguard, for sure! Oh! And Sinistar! Sinistar Recharged!
@cyberpunknut1099 April 26, 2024 - 9:53 pm
Yeah figured this one would age badly. Why play this when you can play super stardust HD?

QOTD, Tron. All of those games could be beefed up.

I have had fun loading that up on MAME. Going though blowing up asteroids. This, may at least look into it. Maybe if the price isn't too much, may try it for myself. As for the question, I know recently, they did a Popeye game where they tried to turn the game into a 3D world, and heard wasn't that good, but maybe going back to making it a 2D game, like the arcade version, or maybe Kangaroo, that might be a fun one. Or Missile Command. Probables are endless.

One thing I learned from Blasteroids is that Mukor Rules All Galaxies. QOTD: personally I’d love to see another attempt at Time Pilot. Last one was the ‘84 version, not the greatest, but I still like the core dynamic. I guess Luftrausers might be considered a distant descendant, though its creators say they had never tried Time Pilot.

I played an Asteroids clone long ago on pc that included local multiplayer: coop (no friendly fire) or versus (last one standing, asteroids are still present). You could also modify your ship to rebalance fire rate, ship speed, and shield strength.

Man, I remember playing about halfway through Battletoads Double Dragon on the NES back in the day, without too much difficulty, then getting stopped cold by a level based on Asteroids, a concept we never even saw before. I guess it's about time I pick it back up, but I don't look forward too much to the intense practice sessions that might lead to.

What game needs to be recharged? Not sure I'm qualified to answer that question, but I'm curious what a recharged Pacman would actually look like.

Where's my Berzerk Rogue-lite twin stick shooter, already?
@thecollector75 April 26, 2024 - 9:53 pm
No idea if there's been one but love to see an updated missile command ....maybe with some crazy wacky upside down 2 player mode with one at top of screen and one at bottom.... so not only defend opponents missiles but launch your own..... well sounds good in my head lol
@Bole_ZG April 26, 2024 - 9:53 pm
It seems like most effort, time and money went on making Centipede as good as it is. This one and last game (Black Widow) isn't on same level.
@Indie-A-tom April 26, 2024 - 9:53 pm
Seaquest should return. I still find it fun, but a modern update would be great.
