Defunct Games reviews Asteroids: Recharged by Atari, available December 14 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, Switch and PC.
While longtime fans of Asteroids will find a lot of nostalgia in this Recharged sequel, new players may be bored with the slow pacing and frustrating gameplay. Even with the addition of power-ups and Recharged trappings, the monotonous structure keeps this from hitting the same heights as Centipede or even Black Widow. Worst of all, the always trusty challenge mode only helps to highlight the inherent shallowness of this concept. Asteroids: Recharged is a big disappointment.

Nova Drift being the most recent example I've seen. It plays a bit differently of course but there are hundreds of ship mods and the enemies engage you. I wildly more enjoyable experience.
But to be honest I actually adore Minestorm on the Vectrex even more that Asteroids..
I agree they could mix up the colours more and also perhaps take some tip from some of the Pacman Championship games - for example give your ship an energy ram and make it crash into the asteroids to destroy them as a change to game play. Or make it so you ship only shoots out the back but that the front of the ship bounces off if it hits an asteroid - that sort of thing.
I really hope some one does something Championship style with an oldfashioned Maze game, the likes of Ladybug, Mouse Trap, Clean Sweep and so on would be so well suited to that - and I kinda wished that Bandai Namco would buy up the rights to all the old Exidy and so one stuff and add it to their own Pacman series.
QOTD, Tron. All of those games could be beefed up.
What game needs to be recharged? Not sure I'm qualified to answer that question, but I'm curious what a recharged Pacman would actually look like.
