Back in 2016, Russ shared his thoughts on the current state of hip-hop, explaining that a lot of producers today are making similar sounding beats. He added that the “pedantic” nature of the situation leads to wack music, and is the reason why he thinks the producers are to blame, not rappers.

bruh i would never hate on the beat. it's artist the raps that suck!
Everybody wants to freaking rap it's getting boring.
Bring funky beats and groove back also.
This guys gonna talk about the state of hip hop? Dang vladtv got a sense of humor
This dude is an idiot. That's why culture vultures should be banned from hip hop…
From a hip hop music producer, he spoke the truth in a disrespectful manner. He could of worded his message better regardless he's right. the majority of modern hi hop producers sound the same. Let me guess… they download a copy of fl studio, download some vst's, download a 808 trap drum kit, and start making beats. How many modern hip hop producers understand music theory. How many even know basic scales, chords, and chord progressions. How many producers can lay down bass-lines, have ever worked with real musicians, can play instruments, or even own any piece of hardware besides a midi controller. There not producers there more like plug and play beat-makers. We still have some talented and great producers in this modern era, but majority of modern producers are generic. The producers like Dr. Dre, Neptunes, Scott Storch, Just Blaze, and Timbaland. These are some of the greatest to ever do it, we should try to evolve from them but were regressing. There probably ashamed of the simplistic modern sound of today, its really sad.
You'll really don't understand where he coming from. Would you expect Biggie or DMX to rap to a Mariah Carey or a slow R&B beat with a 140 bpm? They would have to start riddle rapping. The background music doesn't fit the message or theme so he's right this music is for the pill poppers!
Facts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
russ is a legend fuck ya'll
😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂
yaaawwwnnn…. next question! :-/
This man is Right the beats all sound the same 140 bpm snore, zzzzzzz
hell just face facts
hip hop and popular music in general just SUCKS NOWADAYS period!!
FUCK RUSS
Russ hurt a lot of producers feelings lmao
Complains about producers sending packs of beats that all sound the sound…. Creates an album where all the beats sound the same.
how high was this guy, whoa
Russ is right.
He does have a point not gonna front. Most of these producers produce beats which are trap/melodic beats so for a artist who wants to spit bars on a track who does he go to?Yes they can create a non trap beat but it's not gonna be half decent. Can u see Jada or Fab spitting on a London on day track or metro beat?no..Same goes for lil yat/dext etc… on a premier or Dre beat?no…their are alot of other producers like alchemist etc..but they are from Dre era.The only guy I would fuck with from this new gen is probably Zaytoven. All these other producers making a beat less than 10min and u expect people to spit on them? And that's where I think people don't got the bars anymore it's all trap.
Lmfaoo tallest midget? wtf is this dude talking about?
you know what i’m saying
yep blame the producer which makes rap the most listen to genre in the usa and all the rappers rap about are cars, money, and chains
this guy can't even construct a proper sentence lol.
Everyone plays a role in this chill out keyboard kings
Everything is all computerized nowadays which is another messed up thing with todays music. I bet half of these new so called producers dont even know how to play an instrument. They just copy n paste. And russ is defo right about the tempo of music too. What i got from 90's music as well is that the sampling for tracks educated me, when i heard a certain sample i'd go and look up the original. Years to come all the music greats will be lost and will be calling people like lil yachty, uzi vert etc legends. And i don't like the way lil yachty put all those people on his album cover called 'teenage emotions' who are personally going through daily struggles and he did'nt make no songs relating to any of those people, i can't believe he'd do something like that to boost album sales
It's also the rappers' fault. They're bad rappers. Bad rappers contribute to bad rap music. Who the fuck is this dude anyway? I don't think I've met a single person who bumps his shit.
y'all get ready for TITAN-UP Productions then
I totally agree with russ. In the 90's every producer had they're own signature sound for example dj premier, dame grease, swizz, mannie fresh, klc from no limit, jt tha bigga figga, dr dre, timbaland, i would know immediately which producer made what song because of they're signature sound, nowadays shits just generic but that's all we have to go by. In the 90's every coast had they're signature sound to, west coast was g-funk, east was boom-bap, south was that base in ya face. The only producers that are good is zaytoven, cardo got wings and dj fresh from the bay area
this is bs lmao. producers are an integral part of hiphop, sure. But rappers are the ones who bring the fans in. Fans gravitate toward the rapper, fans relisten and continue to listen because they like their favourite rapper.
whats popular is determined by 2 main factors, who is the face of the music? is the music good?
if youre picking shit "140bpm" beats then the issue is you as an artist. Its literally like trying to paint a cat and then blaming the cat when noone appreciates your shit painting, HOW ABOUT CHOOSE A BETTER CANVAS?? LMAO.
Boy u ass
russ is wack
Media and major labels pushing garbage for the agenda is the problem. I have met with major labels, I had albums on deck, they are not interested in Artist development. They want to pick the beats themselves and they are looking for a radio hit. That's if they think you're "marketable". I have a lot of respect and appreciation for producers and sound engineers, I was living out of my car trying to find a studio or place to set up with limited knowledge of my recording programs, I often think if i had a producer or sound engineer to help me take my sound to the next level that would be a huge help. Mixing and mastering isn't cheap for good quality sound. Teamwork makes the dream work.
