Defunct Games reviews Bat Boy, available now on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Switch, Xbox One and PC.
In a year full of great throwback games, Bat Boy is one of the best. Think of it as a sports-themed Mega Man, complete with athletic bosses and levels based on everything from basketball to soccer to tennis. With gorgeous pixel graphics, a snappy soundtrack, precise gameplay and expertly-crafted stages, this is a treat for anybody who grew up loving 8-bit platformers. My only complaint is that I was left wanting more. Not just a good game, Bat Boy is a grand slam.

Megaman is not good because of its level design? Seriously?
In all honesty, this does look amusing, and it was definitely on the spectacular side how you could smack the hostile environment with your baseball bat and propel yourself off like that đ.
However, now as before, could you please tell me how this game is saved?
So that I may know how to (hypothetically) play this in the future…
Great review
"…get that helmet and jock strap ready, because…"
Damn, I thought it was date night!
This one sounds awesome and I wouldnât have heard of it if not for you! Qotd – Probably Shovel Knight and I love the retro looking horror games with PSX style graphics
Panzer Paladin and River City Girls are awesome modern throwbacks, but the best oneâs gotta be Shredderâs Revenge.
With Michael Keaton returning the batsuit, kinda thinking of Bat Boy saying in a deep voice, "I'm Bat Boy!" đđđ¤Ŗ As for the question, hmmmm, wonder if the Leisure Suit Larry Wet Dreams Don't Dry games count. After all, they are throw backs to the original Leisure Suit Larry games. If so, I'll say those ones.
Astalon: Tears of the Earth and Huntdown for me. Both are well balanced and don't overcomplicate things. One thing that disappoints me with some of the new "retro" games is that they complicate the controls, trying to add as many abilities as possible. As much as I like 2D pixel games for their look, it's also the simplicity that appeals.
You've been reviewing some stinkers lately. Glad you found something that you enjoyed. đ
… I wish the environments in this one were more detailed. I dig the animations. I am a big baseball fan. Maybe if I see it on sale đ
Huntdown has to be my favorite throwback game. But that was a few years ago. Surprisingly a very fun throwback to Resident Evil came out on PS4/PS5 this month with Vaccine Rebirth. Is it janky and silly? Yup. Does it capture the exact feeling of old school survival horror in feel and gameplay? Definitely.
8:28 I definitely won't kick PS1-style and homebrew Game Boy horror games out of bed.
