How Netflix’s ‘Pinocchio’ Innovated Stop-Motion Animation | Movies Insider | Insider

Guillermo del Toro’s Netflix adaptation of “Pinocchio” breathes new life into the over-century-old art form of stop-motion animation. The film achieved a new level of expressiveness in its animated puppets by marrying traditional stop-motion techniques with newer technologies.

We spoke with “Pinocchio” puppet fabrication supervisor Georgina Hayns and animation supervisor Brian Leif Hansen about the labor of love behind the film.

Hayns and Leif Hansen are world-renowned stop-motion artists who brought their expertise to the three-year undertaking that was “Pinocchio.” Previously, Hayns supervised character fabrication for “Kubo and the Two Strings” (2016), “The Boxtrolls” (2014), “ParaNorman” (2012), and “Coraline” (2009). Leif Hansen was an animator on “Missing Link” (2019), “Fantastic Mr. Fox” (2009), and “Frankenweenie” (2012).

Both artists worked on Tim Burton’s “Corpse Bride” (2005), which was pioneering for its use of geared heads to express nuanced emotion in stop-motion characters, a technique adopted in “Pinocchio.” Meanwhile, other stop-motion films like “Coraline” laid the groundwork for the implementation of 3D printing technology in “Pinocchio.” Del Toro’s team built and expanded upon all of these tools and more to light up the lived-in world of “Pinocchio.”

This movie was great, but I hated all of the songs, it didn't need to be a musical

I watched this so many times. I love these types of movies I'll watch any if I see it's stop motion clay type looking. when I was young i remember a nightmare before Christmas was my first and I loved it. I believe it was 97 or so

Butuh kesabaran dan ketelatenan yang sangat ekstra untuk satu film animasi stop motion... Aku merasakan sendiri untuk sekedar video 1 menit durasi.

Then: let's handcraft this puppet, scan it, then animate it in a computer.
3:38 Now : let's create this puppet in a computer, print it, then animate it by hand.

That was like the worst, and creepiest movie ever made. Why on earth would we be celebrating this? Like honestly, in 20 minutes,.I was creeped out, and found absolutely nothing redeeming about it. It was an AWFUL MOVIE. Like, yeah, the animation was spot on. That much I get. But, the story was so bizarre. It's like, too realistic. Stories aren't meant to be that realistic. It's just too much. There was literally no love or compassion in the film, but it was something like a demonically possessed doll freaking everyone out. Almost like Chucky, in a way. It just lacked any good affect at all.

Absolutely love this BTS video. Thanks to everyone driving the industry forward with continual innovation.

stop motion is almost pointless today, you have cgi that can look like that, with much low cost and time. it is just a kind of nostalgia when they keep doin it
@FizzleFX April 19, 2024 - 10:58 pm
Reminds me of Kubo 😊

Disney: makes fakes real
They: make reality fake
I prefer having animals with expressions over reality.

It shows they got passion and aint full of themselves. They want to create and be creative. Not show off how many restrictions they can implement and get away with it!

When did movie making get so backwards that movoes are not considered entertainment anymore but a monument to (a director's) hybris??
@MeRod. April 19, 2024 - 10:58 pm
Beautiful film, but I disagree with the choice of the design of the characters. The dark, scary looks were terrifying! 😢
@Enzo98980 April 19, 2024 - 10:58 pm
Good thing the monkey design wasn't the way I was planning, it would be scary for kids Even though this movie doesn't appeal to children much, it gives me a reason to want a puppet
@robociock April 19, 2024 - 10:58 pm
whats the point of so much effort into a stop motion when computer animations look real?
@parisa1262 April 19, 2024 - 10:58 pm

I've come up with a grand story and the way I want to portray it is through stop motion animation. This video was a really big help to me. I've been looking for information on how to make the characters as animated and easy to work with as possible, this video provided me just that. Thank you.

Dang
@dragosandrei April 19, 2024 - 10:58 pm
I dont know why the bother because they are post processed and look cg in the end Why don t they make them on the computer from the start?
@shubhamkadamboss April 19, 2024 - 10:58 pm
Your art is great but with time one day is enough. No future 😊
@nekola203 April 19, 2024 - 10:58 pm
That's not stop motion. That's cheating. It's like Fast and Furious when they say all their effects are practical and not CGI lol
