Review: Patrick’s Parabox (Steam) – Defunct Games

by admin

Defunct Games reviews Patrick’s Parabox, available now on PC, Mac and Linux.

Patrick’s Parabox may look and feel a bit simple, but this is a must-play puzzle game with an ocean’s worth of hidden depth. With more than 350 inventive stages and dozens of clever wrinkles to the formula, you won’t find any filler here. This is an expertly-crafted puzzler with precise gameplay, a cool art style, fantastic music and one cool idea after another. I’m still in awe at the ingenuity of the stage designs and how similar it often feels to Inception. Patrick should be happy right now, because his Parabox is a winner from beginning to end.

Probably Keke from Baba Is You

I was expecting some criticism on the game, and didn't get one. the game is good, I agree, but one big criticism that I felt all throughout is that some puzzles were very repetitive, and this was caused by them being too simple/too small, not introducing anything new or interesting and just showcasing an interaction.

what I'm saying is, most puzzles didn't feel like "puzzles", but more of a showcase of a trick the developer found within his system, him just showing us a mechanic or an interaction, without us actually discovering it. the levels felt too guided, too "go there do this" instead of thinking about the interactions ourselves. most of the time I spent in the game wasn't spent on thinking about the puzzle, but on moving around the boxes the only way that is natural for the level.
this was, at least for me, very apparent from the latter levels, which were imo the biggest letdown, being very repetitive and levels feeling the same/having the same solution, only in a slightly different way so as to show us another possibility, and not actually make us think.

contrast this with, let's say, baba is you. when the new mechanic of WORD is introduced, I didn't have to sit through an exhaustive list of 5×5 levels, breaking down to small digestible parts every interaction of the new concept. they didn't make a level to "explain" how WORD works, they made a puzzle that "just so happens" to include WORD, letting us discover it's secrets ourselves.

yeah so my tldr is that the puzzles didn't really require much thought and were mostly showcases of interactions. instead of making us think about a solution "of our own" it felt more like stumbling on the only, guided solution the developer intended.

will be happy to hear your thoughts!

I playtested this game and it's indeed great! Also interested in how the custom level scene will turn out, because the game also has custom level support!

I know the creator of this game! They're really cool, and I'm so happy to see their game released and doing well.

Oh my god this game looks amazing. Thank you for the review, but I'll have to wait to watch it because I'm going to go play the game right now lol

Yep. Sold. Literally just clicked the buy button. I had the biggest smile on my face just seeing the few examples in your video. What a brilliant and wonderful concept!

For the question, hands down the greatest "character" in puzzle game history is the line piece from Tetris. Sorry entire cast of Portal. Tetris even beat you to space

If you enjoy these types of mind-bending box-pushing games, I can also recommend Baba Is You!

Wait a minute, 780 views? Man you're going to feel a little bump in your stats now, the algorithm has favoured you.

I remember there being a box pushing game on the graphing calculators at school.

0:25 maybe it's sleep deprivation but that blew my mind

Does look like a challenge, but a fun challenge. May have to check it out. In answer to your question, wasn't sure how to answer, until you mentioned about Mario being in a puzzle game, which made me think, wasn't there a Sailor Moon puzzle game I've played in the past, and sure enough, there was, so my answer is none other that The Guardian of Peace and Justice herself, Sailor Moon. 😉

That looks cool, love the rewind function.

QOTD, That's a broad questions since we have stuff like puzzle fighter, that final fantasy pictologica, etc. I'm going with Alucard from the symphony of the night puzzle game that was released on older generations iPhones. That should have been ported to something.

Favorite Puzzle game hero? Lolo and Lala rank pretty highly, as well as the good Professor Layton. This game is one of the most unique and original takes on the Sokoban formula I ever saw and it's amazing they pulled it off. My brain melted just watching this review.

… the kid from Hue is pretty good.

I've been following Patrick's Parabox for a while and am excited to play it. The thing is, I'm still playing and enjoying Baba is You. I know they're not the same game, but they definitely seem like they are both puzzlers that lean heavily on abstract thinking and spacial awareness. Should I just put Baba is You down or wait until I finish it?
