Russ: We Need to Blame Producers, Not Artists, for Wack Music Today

Atlanta-based artist Russ recently stopped by the VladTV office to share his thoughts on why he thinks people should be blaming producers, not artists, should be blamed for today’s so-called wack music. He added that super producers like Dr. Dre and Timbaland fell back after making their mark, and now there has been an influx in wack music being released.

No artist wants to be outshined by their own instrumentals. So they CHOOSE wack beats. But in order for that to happen the beat is already wack when its presented to them. It's not completely the fault of the producer, but it does play a major role in what's hot and what's not.

I think there is a difference between a beat maker and a producer. I think we have really good beat makers but have the lack of producers that guide artist to do another take and make sure the actual song is completed in the vision of whatever it is.

In my opinion, people forget that a producer is an artist, a rapper is an artist, a sound engineer is an artist (although they are a very technical artist they still in the same pool), so hearing this guy Russ putting a blame on bad music solely on the producer, I feel like he doesn't fully understand or maybe he forgets that a rapper is also an artist, meaning if a producer sends you 20 wack tracks and as a rapper you feel like it doesn't inspire your own art then as a rapper (AN ARTIST) you should not proceed with it in the first place. Knowing and recognising what good music sounds like is one of the main thing of being an artist. so as a rapper you shouldn't feel like you don't have a choice. You have a choice to say "We are not creating good music here" and have the passion and dedication to go out into the world and search for that good sound no matter how far, how impossible, how long it takes to find it in this world and once you do MAKE ART WITH IT. To put it in a simpler way, If a you as a rapper don't have a say in what goes into your art, then you might need to reevaluate your purpose.
