Bugatti’s and Lamborghinis might be great for super rich people and posters pinned on kids walls, but for the average speed freak those million dollar cars aren’t an option. With only room in the garage for one car they need something that can deliver the smiles per hour and fit it in city parking spots. The compact sports car is everything a sports car is supposed to be, minimal and engaging. It’s still the 21st century, though, so even the car that is the spiritual successor of the bare bones roadsters of the 50s and 60s, the Mazda Miata, comes with the modern bells and whistles like touchscreen controllers and collision detectors. The formula of light weight and well massaged engines combine for cars that have usable performance and usable cars. Cars that started life as bargain grocery getters like the Civic, Golf, Impreza, and Mini have been transformed into crowd favorite sports cars. Don’t think you’re compromising performance, most of these cars reach 60mph in under 5 seconds and enough grip to conquer the most daunting canyon road. Long established sports car brands like Porsche and BMW join unexpected companies that have produced worthy sports cars like Hyundai, Volkswagen, and Honda. Is there a sports car on the small side that you would put on this list? What’s your favorite way to enjoy that performance? Club racing, canyon carving, bracket racing?
