Review: Sephonie (Steam) – Defunct Games

by admin

Defunct Games reviews Sephonie, available now on PC, Mac and Linux.

Sephonie proves yet again that you need more than a great setup and compelling location to make a great game. Not even the cool science elements, puzzle mini-games and lengthy story are enough to make up for the awful gameplay and bland presentation. This is, without a doubt, one of the worst-playing 3D platformers I’ve experienced, featuring loose controls, an unruly camera and slipper platforms. There are some truly compelling concepts and ideas hidden away in a game that almost dares you to play to the end. Don’t do it, Sephonie is not worth your time.

For the Question of the Day i have to say Sally Face honestly..It was a fun game in the beginning but it got repetetive quick with the same "Go and search each room in the building for X" and the Story was the most loose part of the game. It left more questions open then answered and it's just trying too hard to be edgy and different.

have u played anodyne 2 return to dust?

I'm surprised you took the time to go over this one- then again- if there's a game that hasn't been given attention you'll find it here.
QotD: Now that I have Elden Ring I am having a hard time answering these questions. guess that makes the question more important-
7Days on series X re-release (gamebreaking bugs still there, 0 fixes). I've never hated a game so much, that me working around it while it's actively working against me (deleting entire saves, practically telling me/us not to play it) would end up having a weird masochistic allure. It gave me an itch outside the 4th wall.
probably not healthy.

Its a shame this isnt as good as I was hoping itd be. I really enjoyed Anodyne 2. I wanted it to scratch that itch but what made it so good was its blend of styles and story telling.

QotD: I've been disappointed with the wonky, uncooperative camera and loose controls of The Last Guardian. I still enjoy the game, but given its 10 year dev cycle, I just assumed all of that would have been polished out (or at least patched out by now).

… that is some of the worst looking water I have seen in a while.
I was disappointed by super time force ultra. Played it maybe twice. The short timer is not fun.

Yeah, when making a platformer, control should be your top priority. So, just saying bad controls was enough for me to see why this doesn't come recommended. As for the question, maybe a F95 Zone game called A Wife and Mother. And the disappointment, it's nothing game breaking or anything, quite the opposite, they released a Part 2, and a patch to link parts one and two together in save files. So far, so good. However, maybe it's because of the path I'm on, basically turning her to the pink side, game play of what was available I made it through in under 2 minutes until the To Be Continued screen popped up. So my disappointment was that there wasn't more.

Found it hard to tell what you were doing in most of that. The platforming stuff looks like it's from two different games in some clips.

QOTD, Trigger Witch wasn't as good as i hoped it would be. Has a cool setting and gameplay but the levels and enemies make it a bit unfun to play.

So, the most accurate 90's nostalgia ever?

QotD: Neverwinter Nights. The plague story is compelling and relatable enough. The unnecessary complexity of the controls was an unintentional puzzle game. And I love the high resolution, low polygon look. Everyone seems made out of crystal.

But the game's difficulty goes from nearly impossible to survive to nearly impossible to lose in a heartbeat. And every environment is designed to waste as much of your time as humanly possible. It's not how I wanted to lose myself in a game.

Plus, it's difficult to figure out which characters actually matter – the game's script thinks some do and some don't, but some of the background characters are better written than the characters I'm supposed to care about.

It's really taught me to appreciate more focused adventures.
