Review: SENSEs: Midnight (Steam) – Defunct Games

by admin

Defunct Games reviews SENSEs: Midnight by Suzaku and EastAsiaSoft, available now on PC and Mac.

SENSEs: Midnight is a throwback to a time when survival horror was all about using tank controls to outrun ghouls and ghosts. This updated remix on the formula sees a young girl live-stream herself entering a haunted park in the middle of the night. Things do not go well, which both delights and horrifies her hyper-active chatroom. That’s a cool gimmick for a horror game, but the potential is undermined by a short adventure that ends right as it’s starting to pick up speed. Other issues involve a frustrating inventory system, easily avoidable ghosts and a park that is so small that you’ll be sick of backtracking within the first few minutes. It’s a bit of a mess, but ghost-hunting is way more fun than watching somebody spend the afternoon sitting in a kiddie pool.

Ooh thanks for letting me know about this. I actually backed the original and have it on Vita and PS4 and enjoyed it. This looks like a good sequel for me, being a sadistic fan of tank controls. May have to grab it.

The fatal frame series has gone downhill and it looks like no one else going to pick up the mantle just yet.

I'm looking forward to giving this a shot. Holding out for a phyiscal edition, like the previous game.

As for the question of the day: The apartment in Silent Hill 4: The Room was amazing. You're supposed to feel safe there, but you really don't.

Whoa….talk about The Uncanny Valley!

I think the scariest places are abandoned amusement parks and probably derelict space stations

This looks right up my alley scene-wise but combat looks boring. You actually do anything to enemies or just use an item here and there? Shame, the concept seems really cool.

QOTD, Scariest place in a horror game is the elementary school in zombiU.

The first game in the series was a decent 2D take on survival horror adventure so I had to take a double-take it not only having a sequel, but in 3D. Definitely interested to give this one a go.

QOTD; Nothing beats a space station breaking around you. Though I mainline on space stations filled with demons, mutants or aliens designed by late Swiss surrealist master, that setting is scary enough by itself. If you don't believe me, check out Deliver Us The Moon – having a giant crumbling metal can being the only thing between you and the void of space is chilling.

Interesting, I played through the first Sense-game, which was in 2D. It was an average game. It too suffered from a rather low difficulty and annoying item-puzzles. In the first game you were only allowed to pick up the items you currently need. This time its a 4 item limitation, huh? Switching one annoying aspect with another doesnt seem smart. It seems this one will be another "only get it in an bundle"-game for me.

Qotd Silent Hill. That foggy atmosphere in town and later other side of world with rust and blood.

So, she goes to a park with ghosts and doesn't bring along a proton pack, and futher more, she expects to pick up items and doesn't bring along a Link unlimited items bag, she came unprepared. 😉😂🤣 But seriously, this does sound like another game, was on the right track, just doesn't reach there. As for the question, difficult to answer, I mean with right kind of mood, really it could be any place. So not exactly sure how to answer this one.

can't remember which Metroid (SNES I think)- the opening just off the ship- that distant lonely tone and inanimate bodies sprawled around set the bar and tone for me going forward.
then silent hill for its obligatory mission to train people in fear through obscurity.
PT set the highest bar. I don't think I'll ever forget that house.
