Review: Death of a Wish (Switch & Steam) – Defunct Games

Defunct Games reviews Death of a Wish by melessthanthree, available now on Switch and PC.

Hack and slash your way through the nightmarish world of Neo-Sanctum in Death of a Wish, the action-packed follow-up to Lucah: Born of a Dream. Using harsh and almost violent scratches to draw the details, this is an emotional journey that has a lot to say about religion, trauma and what it takes to heal. It’s also an intense action game that may look like a chaotic mess at times, but makes perfect sense and is extremely easy to get into. Harsh and unflinching, Death of a Wish is not only one of the year’s best games, but also an experience that will stick with you for a long time to come.

Born of a dream! I knew I recognized the visual style, but I didn't know they had a sequel out! Definitely checking this game out now, if this can be as interesting as that... but did you play this on Switch or PC? I suppose the scratchy style isn't THAT taxibg, but was the performance okay in your eyes?

Also, for the question: Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. One of the first big and dramatically voiced western action games whose story really TRIED that I can recall. FF6 is also a big formative experience, but I feel like Soul Reaver 2 fit the bill of this particular video better.

The reason I watch your videos is because you show off games I never hear about otherwise.

To answer your question about an older game that really stuck with me, I'll say that it was either "The Crypt" or "The Nightmare" from 1982 on the Atari 800. The reason I can't decide which is because they were both horror games designed by the same guy with identical mechanics published by Epyx. I couldn't remember the name of the game from my childhood, but narrowed it down to one of these two. The reason for the slight uncertainty is because I remember the game being terrifying, but it doesn't have that effect on me now. I remember wandering around a haunted area which was quite desolate and mysterious with noboody around and then suddenly seeing a warning appear on screen that a vampire was nearby and coming to find me and then I saw it come on screen and was frantically racing for my life to get away from it. The cap to this story is that it turns out the games were created by a teenager named Marc Benioff, who is now the CEO of Salesforce and has a net worth of over ten billion dollars.

It does seem interesting, and may check that out. My games to play list is pretty empty tonight, just 1 previously caught up with Dev game, so would have time to do so. As for the question, maybe the original Legend of Zelda. Going around Hyrule collecting the Triforce Pieces, then saving Zelda from Ganon still think about to this day.

There are a lot of older games with stories that stick with me, it's pretty hard to choose... Final Fantasy VI or VII, Megaman X4, Earthbound, but for this one I'm gonna go with Xenogears.
As a kid/preteen, I'd never seen a game challenge ideas of religion, identity and social structure in a way that made me really reflect on myself and my surroundings in such a way, as I was a bit too young to "get" the subtext of FFVII, which I played prior

Got the previous game, Born of a Dream, in my library, because it looked awesome. But I've yet to play it.
