Mario & Sonic 2008 - Good game, good start to the franchaise
Mario & Sonic 2010 - Better game, adds costumes for Miis, increases Roster
Mario & Sonic 2012 - Best game, best soundtrack, lots to do.
Mario & Sonic 2014 - Haven't played it yet.
Mario & Sonic 2016 - Good game, but where things started to go wrong. Newly added characters could only play the single event you unlocked them from.
Mario & Sonic 2018 - Er... What game?, this never came out.
Mario & Sonic 2020 - Looks good but scaled down massively including the removal of the Miis and the repeated problem with new characters in 2016 (Miis stomp feet in anger - Miitopia)
What put me off buying the game is the removal of the Miis and the same problem that ruined the 2016 game. Seriously, in the 2022 or 2024 entry (if they get made), it they took the gameplay and music from 2012 and actually increased the Roster to include the newly added characters from 2016 & 2020 to play all events, plus bring back the Miis. You'd have the perfect Mario & Sonic Olympics game. Rosalina & Rouge are my favorite new additions to the series, I don't mind unlocking them in game but we should at least be able to play as them in all events and not just the event we unlocked them from.
What gets my goat is when Nintendo & Sega create a disappointing game, then it takes them 4 years to repeat the same mistakes of what made the previous entry bad and do it again, plus scale it down. We don't get enough full blown games released as it is (And Covid-19 isn't the main reason, it just helped with delay things as of 2020), so waiting patiently for them to release another poor game is an insult to us Nintendo and Sega fans thus why I'm losing faith in the video gaming industry.
1. They repeated what the Rio 2016 did
and 2: They didn't add in the Mii Characters in this game. All I can say to whoever did this game is "Why? Why didn't they add in Mii characters in Mario and sonic 2020 Olympic Games?"
