Boogie Nights. Stacked cast with the perfect blend of humor, tension and sadness.
One to add to your list....a Nartin Scorcese which doesn't ever get much press...KUNDUN. A stunning, lavish feast for all the senses , part fiction, but based on some truths about the early formative years of the current Dahli Lama, the 14th.
It's like enjoying fantasy - until you realise it's built around a real, currently living, person. KUNDUN is the name of the very first Dahli Lama
and the belief that he reincarnates himself periodically. It is truly worth a watch...
also... Eyebrows has become quite the transverse and wonderful actor
THE ADVENTURES OF PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT - put aside your homophobia. ABBA turds and ping pong balls...
AVALON - few films better capture the spirit of the "American Dream"
BABE - 1975 biopic of legendary female athlete "Babe" Didriksen-Zaharias, who later founded the LPGA.
BEST IN SHOW - becoming a cult classic...
BOILER ROOM
BREAKER MORANT - "SHOOT STRAIGHT, YOU BASTARDS!"
CITIZEN X - low-budget but excellent HBO production about Russian police attempting to capture serial killer Andrei Chikitilo amidst Soviet bureaucracy
CITY OF JOY
CONFESSIONS OF A DANGEROUS MIND
COP LAND - unfairly dismissed as a studio "cop flick"
DROP DEAD GORGEOUS - Allison Janney ROCKS as trailer-trash "Loretta"
EDUCATING RITA
ELECTION - that it's not even a cult classic is criminal
FOUR DAYS IN SEPTEMBER - in Portuguese, subtitled, true story of the 1969 kidnaping of US Ambassador to Brazil Charles Elbrick
GALAXY QUEST
A HATFUL OF RAIN - 1957 flick with Don Murray and Eva Marie Saint touching on the then-taboo subject of drug addiction
JACKIE BROWN - Tarentino's best, I don't care what anybody says
JUNE BUG
LITTLE CHILDREN
LONE STAR - John Sayles + Chris Cooper winning formula.
MATEWAN - early John Sayles. Chris Cooper's film debut
THE MILAGRO BEAN FIELD WAR
THE MONEY PIT - forget cinematic excellence... it's one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. Tom Hanks should've stuck to comedy
MURIEL''S WEDDING
NORTH COUNTRY
OCTOBER SKY
ONCE WERE WARRIORS - buy it TODAY if you haven't seen it.
ONE FALSE MOVE
PACK OF LIES - great made-for-TV adaptation of the cold-war-era play, with Ellen Burstyn and Teri Garr. Based on a true story
RADIO DAYS
RADIO FLYER - Bobby DOES NOT fly off to some magic kingdom...
THE RAIN PEOPLE - FF Coppola's breakout. James Caan, Shirley Knight, Robert Duvall
ROAD GAMES - a TBS late-night staple in the 80s
THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS
RUNNING ON EMPTY
SECONDHAND LIONS
A SERIOUS MAN
A SIMPLE PLAN
SLING BLADE - it's amazing how many people have never seen it
SMALL TIME CROOKS - ignored Woody Allen gem. Loose remake of 1942's Larceny Inc.
THE SNAPPER - the odd-one-out from Roddy Doyle's "Barrytown" trilogy. Colm Meany is priceless in this one.
STIR OF ECHOES
TENDER MERCIES - Robert Duvall's best performance ever
THE WINDOW - 1949 "boy who cried wolf" flick
Directed by Ben Stiller. Stars Jim Carrey and Matthew Broderick.
Whenever I ask if people have seen this movie, they usually say they haven't heard of it, which is a crying shame. It is a genius dark comedy and slight thriller(?)
Anyways, I think its a great watch if you're a fan of Jim Carrey's comedic and dramatic portrayals, because it has both.
In the 2020s video makers still can't figure it out ...
