How Great Jump Scares Are Made In Horror Movies (Vs. Bad Jump Scares) | Movies Insider

by admin

Horror films are filled with jump scares, moments that shock and startle viewers as monsters, serial killers, ghosts and even cats pop out of the darkness. But while jump scares are a very common element to include in a scary movie, they don’t always work as intended, and often, you might just end up laughing instead of screaming. To find out what goes into creating an effective jump scare we spoke with Rebekah McKendry. a film professor at USC who specializes in horror. What makes certain scenes in “The Conjuring,” “Insidious,” and “The Exorcist 3” so terrifying while others like in “Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan” fall flat?

A jump scare that you can tell is going to happen is a bad jump scare.

How do you make a great jump scare? You don't. They are the cancer of the horror genre.

@satriadicky3732 April 10, 2024 - 3:36 am

My favorite jumpscare is when something is always in the field of vision, seems harmless and docile until it made a move right at you.

Cockroach and the policeman by the side of the road came to mind😂

@arthurs3058 April 10, 2024 - 3:36 am

Wouldn’t it be better just to build up whole time (and make 2-3 jump scares). Like do 30-40 minutes buildup, wouldn’t that be cool?

Damn, I’ve never seen the mirror scare from Repulsion, and it’s actually my favorite version of it. The hidden character being caught by the mirror as it turns rather than waiting right behind their victim… and the audience being left in suspense as to if the victim saw them there or if only we did… Damn it’s effective!

Actually, the Hannibal hand cuff scene when he escapes is an earned jump scare….with a great build up.

@LethalSaliva April 10, 2024 - 3:36 am

They forgot the cat jump scare from A View to a Kill.

@Alex-Rocks April 10, 2024 - 3:36 am

One of my favourite jump scares is from the movie "SMILE" where Rose listens to the adio clip…
Just rewatched that scene, still giives me shivers!!!

I love that this insight covers all… Including Asian horror from early 2000s!

@megabryant3944 April 10, 2024 - 3:36 am

See Jason standing anywhere after getting away from him is the jump scare

@Stratmanable April 10, 2024 - 3:36 am

Jump scares are a cheap crutch for filmmakers too lazy or stupid to write a good script.

@AlphaScoops April 10, 2024 - 3:36 am

I’m going to be honest the jump scares don’t get me (most of the time) but it is the loud sound that hurts my ears and I hate it

@gergopiroska5749 April 10, 2024 - 3:36 am

They also use 18htz sounds (which makes you uneasy amd or dizzy) just before the jumpscare

04:28 mudvayne – dig

@harrycake9407 April 10, 2024 - 3:36 am

We need more subtle breadcrumbs that are only seen after you've seen the film a second time. Those subconscious breadcrumbs are the best.

@mac494 April 10, 2024 - 3:36 am

I really like it when famous actors get little roles in horror movies, it is a sign of actors being down to earth. Just like in Insidious we can see that the demon is portrayed by Darth Maul.

@davidunderhill5311 April 10, 2024 - 3:36 am

My favourite jumpscare is from the Invisible Man reboot starring Elisabeth Moss. You know the one if you've seen it. Ladder, attic, etc. The misdirection is so good, just from the filmmakers understanding of whether the audience's focus is gonna be on the foreground, midground, or background…and then surprising them. <3

@RandomNorwegianGuy. April 10, 2024 - 3:36 am

There is this movie called Kairo. There is a scene there which I consider to be the scariest scene ever. It's a scene that probably last, only for minutes, but the whole time is insanly tense, and you anticipate an jump scare. But the jump scare never happens. But that does not matter, because that extreme tension (including the fact that the man is trapped in a dead end) makes the scene a million times more scary than any jump scares that I can think of

@aligmal5031 April 10, 2024 - 3:36 am

maybe the jason scene wasn't suppose to be a jumb scare ?

@GdoesStufff123 April 10, 2024 - 3:36 am

Hold on ima send this to Scott Cawthon for the next fnaf movie

@cool-aquarian April 10, 2024 - 3:36 am

I am a big horror fan, and honestly not fan of jumpscares.
I find them cheap and dumb way to scare someone.
Always prefer a silent uneventful scare that slowly sinks in as something really dark.
Ex: the opening scene in movie Midsommar.
