“Klaus,” Netflix’s first animated film, is an origin story of Santa Claus. Because the Oscar-nominated movie appeals to nostalgia, director Sergio Pablos and his team at The SPA Studios in Madrid decided to make the film in 2D. But they also wanted to advance the look, so they developed new technology that adds details like lighting and texture to the characters that make them appear 3D. We spoke with Pablos to find out how they made the innovative film, which earned an Academy Award nomination for best Animated Feature and seven Annie Awards. “Klaus” stars Jason Schwartzman, J.K. Simmons, Rashida Jones, Will Sasso, Norm MacDonald, and Joan Cusack.

That's what we could have if DBS super hero wasn't 3D
Lmao at 1:19 the guy is listening to the Joe Rogan podcast
I LOVE ANIMATION MOVIES
I watched this movie just because how it looked
This movie was FANTASTIC! The animation, the story, the characters. We now watch it every Christmas.
This is an INCREDIBLE movie. So well done!
Looks awesome! Do you know in which software they used this "KlaS tool" to do the lighting? Is that tool availablesomewhere?
I loved this movie my boys loved it too!
So many visual improvements are a delight for eyes and brains without killing professional artists. Thank you for the good vibes.
it would be neat to see a final product without the 'cleanup' stage @ 2:02. the mixture of hand drawn and 3d is what makes this so great, why cover that up? if youre animating everything to look like it was made in 3d what is the point?
7:27…. 727 WHEN YOU SEE IT 727
Such an amazing movie. I can't believe the magic they made with this.
oh my god! i thought this was CGI when i first watched this movie! i had no idea that it was actually 2D- that just makes the movie all the more impressive!
Very surface level observations here. Nothing to recommend this video for
love this
I legitimately couldn't tell if it was 3d or 2d when watching.
I thought 3d, but apparently I was wrong lol
Netflix animation is wack compared to Disney movies
Now I know why this is an Award Winning film.
Sergio Pablo is a master of animation and a great guy. he spoke at CTN years and years ago when Klaus was in production, showed us behind the scene of how they were performing these techniques. It was incredible then and even more incredible now. Wow wow <3
Amazing to go from where Disney started using new tech in Rescuers down under, and the CAPS system; to this and I was blown away by it. The same goes for the Stop-Motion studios integrating in fantastic ways.
This is exactly what Disneys Wish should’ve looked like
Wait so you’re saying that the movie wasn’t 3D..?
look what 2d artists need to do to mimic even a fraction of the 3d artists power
i want to watch this
I actually never noticed the characters were 2D I always thought it was fully CGI
This movie actually blew me away. It was such a beautiful and touching movie
Klaus is one of my favourite movies ❤️
Now I can fake SFM with flipaclip!
3d 2d and 2d 3d
awesome
This blew me away when it came out and it still does to this day
It looks like Rayman Legends graphics
Should have been use in disney wish
This is my absolute favourite Christmas movie. Stunning art, amazing character design and style and such a unique story.
This video made me see the movie a few months back, I have absolutely loved it since then. Such a beautiful Christmas movie, absolutely adore both the plot, but also the effort put in by the animation and lighting teams. So beautiful. Great job on the video Business insider!
Given that animation from studios other than Disney are innovating and reshaping the industry, I am very excited to see what works come out of future projects!
I just painted it to look like metal
could you really do that?
its so actually well made i didnt know it was 2d UNTIL this video showed up
One of the greatest christmas film i've ever seen 10/10
A part of me wanted to see it without the lighting/shading
…I love 2d animation really. Animation in Klaus is so charming.
This is how Disneys wish should have been done
0:19 “the characters in Klaus are not CGI”
True, the characters are not. But the subsequent claim that this effect is “all just a trick of the light” is intentionally misleading, because of course—
3:19 “the software tracks movement of the characters”
Achieving this effect through VFX enhancement pioneered through computer software makes this effect …absolutely computer generated. Furthermore—
6:14 "even though these were created with CGI”
Here, it is clearly stated that some objects were created with CGI. And of course CGI was used, as it has been used to make 3D models in 2D films for decades.
I understand it’s a good hook to say CGI wasn’t used because for some reason there’s stigma around it, but just say it was achieved through new CGI techniques! That’s cool!!
Klaus has the best animation I've ever seen.
0:21 come on, Insider, really??? "not CGI"? CGI stands for Computer Generated Imagery and you equalize it with 3D animation. Of course this is a CG movie. The movie is realized by artists with freaking computers. If you dare to produce a video about the pipeline of an animated movie, please at least be aware of the terminology. sounds like one of those "there was no CGI used in this movie" bullshit statements, sorry….
This is what Disney should have done for Wish, not that garbage pastel look.
