Terence Fletcher is a manipulative and sociopathic teacher at a top music school, using his tactics to bend the will of his students into what he believes is greatness. Whiplash would not hold the weight it does without Terence Fletcher’s insanity on screen.

Is even more terrifying is that the movie portrays him as a veteran, someone worth impressing and yes there are musicians in real life who said that the script is flawed when it comes down to the music side

As a former Music instructor I can tell you this is a good review. Further, it happens. I've seen it. I've probably done it although not nearly to that extreme. Good review. It IS scary.

What makes fletcher interesting to me is that he is both a great teacher and a dreadful teacher. Great in that he pushes hard and doesn’t let anything slide, but dreadful in that he teaches through fear, abuse, and psychological manipulation. It could be argued that fear is a way to motivate those who do not have the internal motivation for whatever they are learning, that’s how I was taught in school, but it’s awful - it genuinely will break people. If you inspire the internal desire to do better, the student will learn better - but if they are motivated purely through fear, they won’t function. That’s where Fletcher shows himself as an awful teacher - Teller was already intensely focussed on his learning and practice, deeply motivated - but teller instilled fear into him. My takeaway from the film is that Teller achieved what he wanted IN SPITE of the fear, not because of it. But to fletcher it was the fear that worked.

What I learned about training in solitude is that the sacrifice to endure pain for further growth has to be voluntary. The reason I find "tough love" detrimental, aside from just how demeaning it is, is that it heightens the feelings of anxiety, fear, inadequacy, shame and despair, particularly if you are being ridiculed in front of others.

A good leader/coach/custodian will try to understand their student's strengths and weaknesses, and will not need to rely on malicious negativity to help them achieve their potential.
