As we’re focusing specifically on films in this video, unfortunately, the miniseries ‘Generation War’ (‘Unsere Mütter, Unsere Väter’) won’t be included, however, that is a watch we truly recommend.

,,Die Abenteuer des Werner Holt" is great.
,,The Captain" is Bullshit
"Elser – Er hätte die Welt verändert" or "13 minutes" is no war movie! Also the movie "Die Blechtrommel", "Der Hitlerjunge Salomon" and "Sophie Scholl" were no war movies!
Mal eine Liste von mir ,Das Boot,Der Hauptmann,Unsere Mütter unsere Väter,Im Westen Nix Neues,Der Untergang,Die Brücke,John Rabbe,Hunde wollt ihr ewig Leben. Westfront 1917.Die Männer der Emden.Into the Withe,Stalingrad,Der Fuchs,Der Letzte Akt,Die Gustloff,0815 alle Teile,Der Transport,Das letzte U Boot.und einige mehr.
You can add to this list – Hunde, wollt ihr ewig leben, 1959
The film shows a German look at the rather well-known events of the Battle of Stalingrad
You can add to this list – The Eagle Has Landed, 1976
In general, I liked the film, I was even surprised when I found out that the British had shot it (I thought it was the Germans).
This film will appeal to a narrow circle of specialists (shot quite decently and realistically, with the technical capabilities of 1976). For a wide range of viewers, it will most likely be boring (at least the first half of the film).
Loved your list, only objection I have is that I would put Stalingrad (1993) closer to the top. I would also include Stern von Afrika in the list(full German film-1957), Die Wanseekonferenz (the German version) and Decision before Dawn( American production with lots of German Actors that actually took part in WW2). All are available on YouTube. Also mentioned in the comments is Land of Mine a German Danish co production
Stalingrad, The downfall and the boat are probably not only the best German WWII movies but the best world over WWII movies!
All quiet? Schindler list?
I would like to add to the list "All quiet on the western front "
Whay german's making war movie if is not antiwar?!?. He is human, his not what we thing, what is the reason. Yes, he was a wrong, thay make world and people in great disaster ih history so far. They were not punished enough, their female guards and torturers were sentenced to ridiculous sentences, there are still Nazis alive, why do I need to think about them as human beings in this war. Does anyone here even realize what they have done
2:45 Danzig war Deutsch! Die Danzig-Frage war unter anderem das große Problem zwischen Polen und Deutschland. 98% Deutsche wurden vertrieben. Auch hier wurde Unrecht mit Unrecht „bekämpft“!
I notice there is no mention of any East German films. I'd take Cross of Iron off the list and add on the Adventures of Werner Holt.
Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter.
A list of 10 german war movies without Sophie Scholl's final on it can't be taken seriously. I have seen many on the list and they are good, but the Sophie-movie is in my opinion a movie without any weaknesses, a deeply moving drama from start to the end , yes , I was very surprised to see this list , so for me the list is only almost top 10, with Sophie-movie high up on the list i can agree.😊
das boot #1, well deserved
but the captain is just cucked propaganda
You forgott: die Abenteuer des Werner Holt. The best film I ever saw about 2. WW
So tired of seeing all Germans from that period as inhuman monsters, I crave a more nuanced pov
While I haven't seen all of them, very good list.
Europa (not Europa Europa) might be missing (or not enough war).
One movie that is not on this list:
Gerneration War ("unsere Mütter, unsere Väter")
This is an anti war movie-series of 3 movies about some frined who went in completely different directions in the wartime:
Really a masterpiece i would say – can only recomend it!
I agree. Das Boot is the best film not only German about WWII
All fkn propaganda. Useless
Waths and see in PORTAL … Hitler Rants Parodies 😂😮😂 …
CROSS OF IRON – lee Marvin like leajtnant hero of Reich on ist front, with Soviet automat Spagin !!! FILM directed in SFRJ – Republika Jugoslavija !!!
I was honestly very impressed with the new TV series called "Das Boot"! From what I've seen, the main problem is that people expected it to be relevant to the 1981 (or '82?) movie of the same title. If you're going to watch it, completely forget about the original movie, and take it for what it is. I would say it's a near excellent drama about the Germany Navy of WWII, with focus on submarines, Gestapo, some resitance, mutiny, etc.
The only MAJOR issue I have with this series, is the character called "Carla Monroe" in season 1, which is a very historically inaccurate representation of a "sexy, fierce, feminist, fashionable, Hollywood resistance woman". Jusy try to completely ignore this character, and I will spoil you that she fortunately only is in season 1 of the show. I just finished watching season 3 (out of 4), and I don't think I've ever seen a WWII movie/series like it. It is truly unique, and the setting, uniforms/costumes, hair, makeup, etc. is surprisingly good!
i agree fantastic movie das boat.
This is a thoughtful list. My favorites are also Der Untergang and Das Boot.
German officers did not make their men pull their car like that…pure propaganda and lies.
Never seen das boot generally thought downfall would be number 1
Cool list. Also “Never look away” Werk ohne autor. Is really worth watching. It’s partially WWII and also DDR history.
the captain has special place even along with the stalingrad,my generation, das boot ETC
it is not old classic but it is damn special in someway that i can not explain
maybe how it's filmed? the tone and the atmosphere of whole film is just somethingelse
and also the actor who play the lead was phenomenoal

It is really interesting to know that, when Das Boot came out, the german press was full of negative reviews. In their view the movie was to pro war, to pro 3rd Reich. If these journalists see it diffrent now?
Hi!! great list!! I remember a movie… but don't remember the name…. I thing its a French & German coproduction, Two slightly wounded German soldiers arrive in a French city to replace the garrison, over the days they get to know the inhabitants and show themselves to be normal and ordinary people who just want to survive a lost and senseless war
I think this fits perfectly with your list (excuse my poor english!!)
How could you possibly not include Sophie Scholl in your top ten?
how is all quiet on the western front 30.s or 70.s not on this
Generation war was pretty good as well
Amongst these films, I do not see "I was Nineteen" DEFA 1967/68 Director Konrad Wolf. Is the reason it is not included in "German" cinema the fact it was filmed and produced in East Germany? It is not listed with "Soviet" films, either. Konrad Wolf is not only the director (And, a director with a long history of interesting films), the movie is based on his first hand accounts of returning to Germany as a 19 year old Soviet soldier. A great movie!
Wonderful, 1st-Class Jewish- made Hollywood Movie – made by HillyBillies – for – RedNecks,
