Between ticket prices and concessions, movie theaters are expensive. But movie theater chains like AMC and Regal only keep around 50% of the revenue from ticket sales each year. But theaters are able to keep over 80% of concessions revenue as profit. So most theaters are designed to get you to spend money on food. And it works, AMC reports that more than 71% of attendees spend money on concessions.

Sneaky Ways Movie Theaters Get You To Spend More Money

You think those employees standing behind the concession stand making slave wages care if you sneak in food no they dont
It's a lot, but treating yourself to a fun movie with snacks every once in a while isn't gonna hurt anybody
Another way big companies get you to spend money at the concessions that they don't do anymore was having intermissions.
I really just end up annoyed and snackless cause the prices make you not even want it but you still want it really bad. Movie theater food is a lose lose situation. Even the "eat before you go" thing really doesn't work for me my family usually goes to a buffet for dinner before going to a movie and it does very little to stop you from wanting theater snacks. Alot of the entire point of wanting the food isnt even that you are hungry. It's a famous issue with putting something on while you eat dinner, you finish eating like 20 minutes into the movie and then you feel bored cause the food was a great distraction to put your remaining attention towards rather than literally just sitting there watching. And sure a theater is an inherently more fun experience that isn't as effected as the home experience would be, but it's still a factor of why you find yourself wanting snacks regardless of price and regardless of if you already ate. That's why popcorn and candy are popular movie theater food cause it's not something you can finish quickly, it's something you can periodically munch on throughout the entire movie.
I always bring my own food and drink in.
Since I am not allowed to use a straw or drink anything really except water, and I'm not drinking Dasani (cause like Family Guy says, it tastes like there is a nickel in every body), I will literally sneak a bottle of water in and only buy popcorn. I had gastric sleeve surgery so I pretty much can only drink water. But I am far too cheap to pay $15+ for a matinee so I just rent or stream it when it comes out.
I once snuck in a 12 inch pizza, I was so happy with myself
I just don’t buy popcorn at the theater. If somebody invites me and decides to buy popcorn to share, ‘course I’m gonna have some. But if it’s just me, I go before 4:00 (tickets at my theater are cheaper before 4), and only buy the ticket. I’d rather see two movies with no popcorn, then one movie with popcorn. Once I’m settled I don’t even miss it.
1. Charge $10 for a bucket of popcorn
2. Stop the customers from bringing in their own snacks
Saved you a watch.
Very good advice… eat before you go to the movie.
Fair enough lol it’s a business, unless you want to a lot of money on tickets
I go to theaters only for the food
Ultimately, wear cargo pants.
This is so drawn out & narrated so over-dramatically I couldn’t wait to stop watching.
is the target audience for this 5th graders? bc none of this is a new revelation. This is all well-known stuff
The video of the ice falling only to be followed by coke falling through the ice will always be my weakness
I could be Elon Musk rich and i still aint buying shit from them..ill grab a philly and a monster and put em in my socks…been doing that since i was a kid, over 25 years now and it never fails
Watch movies in the winter time, coats allow for large pockets to bring food in.
Honestly, I don't go to theatres anymore. Big screen at home, great sound system, and comfy seating. All for a fraction of a movie ticket price.
I always buy a super large blue Icee at the concession stand.
In my entire life I've never spent more for tickets at the theater. When I was a kid me and my Nan would sneak candy and Cokes in her purse and if we wanted popcorn we would've made some in the microwave and sneak it in aswell. Those theater prices were insane even back then.
We always take our own food just sneak it in it cheaper
I've known they made more money from food for a long time. And i have never bought anything at the concession stand
The smell of popcorn is what gets you, movies are not worth enjoying without popcorn and drinks.
We have 3 Drive Ins like an hour outside of philly that i try to go to in the summer. Their food prices are always very fair and affordable, so i always grab something from them. I would rather support the little guys
Yep when my wife and I go see a movie it costed us at least 35 bucks 😂
Business Insider discovers basic food marketing
$40 for two people to watch a movie on a weekend night I think I'm done!
I used to work at a movie theater. They take concessions VERY seriously
People should seriously take Ms. Moons advice at the end more seriously. Eat before you go to a movie. I am also guilty of wanting to have something to fidget and snack on during a movie, but if I go without food/snacks I’m not going to not be able to enjoy the movie. I kind of hate that we are all in such a casual state with films that most of us HAVE to eat while watching them. My favorite thing to do is to eat something smaller that’ll last me about 2 hrs and then go out to dinner with my friends afterwards to discuss the movie in detail! It’s a ton of fun. But seriously, If you can afford it, support your theaters by at least buying a few things from them. Life without theaters would be a very sad and dull one.
I once audited a big movie theatre chain and I approve of this. Even the management is grinning about this lol
I love AMC Theaters
What movies are even worth watching in theaters these days? Bunch of woke movies where a woman beats 20 men and has a transgender neighbor and a bi-racial child advocating for open borders and non binary pronouns!!! I go to movies maybe once a year and eat well before going in. No one needs sugary drinks and junk food while watching a trash movies.
Be happy you only need to pay 9 dollar for a movie ticket. In Sweden its 15
The only reason why I don’t care to spend extra money in movie theaters (specifically AMC if I do go more) is to support AMC and preventing their bankruptcy due to their extremely low stock prices for the past 6 months over time suddenly.
McDonald's used to do this to me, i only went in for the clowns.
It s called staying home and not spending all that money.
In Brazil it's ilegal for cinemas to prohibit you from bringing food or drinks that u bought elsewhere, as long as the items are similar to the ones sold in-store and aren't considered a safety threat (such as glass bottles, knives or forks)
😅😂🤣😂🤣 No Outside Food or Drinks are Allowed 🙄 Yeah Right!
Muito obrigado Procon por eu poder levar comida de fora 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
where I'm from tickets are still like 2 dollars
What a wild world we live in. Wasting food for profit
You guys only gets food at the theater? Huehuehue
No movie theatre in North America can legally stop you from brining food from outside sources. Theatres have 0 right to say no to you doing it.
71%??? I swear like everyone just snuck stuff in or just didn’t eat
I… I don't have the pavlovian habit of ordering popcorn when going to the movies. It distracts you from the movie. I also don't order any drink because I don't want to interrupt the movie to go to the toilets by the end.
Why does the narrator sound like he's in cahoots with the movies? His voice sounds like he's trying to hypnotize us with his voice
To be fair, most movie theatres can't afford to sell tickets at current prices and keep the lights on. Our local movie theatre is in a good location and really nice, yet often when we go there's only 1-4 people in a movie. Their tickets cost $10 and after you consider the cost of hiring a full staff at minimum wage, I honestly don't see how they make money without snacks, other than a big opening night for a movie. The demand for theatres is so low and the cost is so high with inflation and operating costs that they are the soon to be abandoned malls.
Another huge killer for theatres today is just the fact that there isn't as many new movies coming out anymore, just because it isn't as profitable and a percentage that do come out, come out straight to streaming services.
