In this video we explore the classic indie developer debate: Which is better, Unity or Unreal Engine?

Both engines have their merits, and the distinction doesn’t seem to be so clear cut anymore. Both Unity and Unreal Engine have made drastic improvements in recent years, and the competition between them has driven a ton of innovation.

From a programmer's point of view, I think Unity is more convenient to work with than Unreal.
Of course, if you want to develop a game of AAA graphic quality, I recommend Unreal.

Never had a project affecting by frequent deprecation? Amazing!

A plus wit Unity is that you can also make non-game apps

LOL. It's time to make a new video. Luckily for me, two and a half years ago when I had to choose between Unity and UE, I chose UE. Many resources are free and can be used for free even in a commercial game (free asset on the market place, quixel megascans, metahumans, ...) and the graphics are of professional quality out of the box.

Even the best Unity games I've ever played still are easily outperformed by regular Unreal Engine games. I used to be of the opinion that this was just skill-based and Unity was used more frequently so thus would have more variety in quality, but it's almost undeniable. I value performance and scalability way more than most other things. Unity just isn't it.
@shapeshifter8986 March 30, 2024 - 11:30 am
unity can be used on older systems, is generally much smaller and help is all over the place

'unreal has visual script solution build in, so you didn't actually have to program anything.' hahaha bro you can't be serious with this take. I mean the difference in scripting and programming is a whole different story, but to say you don't need to be able to program in order to make a game in unreal is like yeah bro, show me that game pls. The difference between blueprint and c# is comparable to the difference between c# and c++, as in one or the other is more convenient and easier to use. You still need to learn how to build complex systems. And that is more or less the same in EVERY language.

unity are capitalist sc(um that tried to shaft game devs. End of.
@streamingamers March 30, 2024 - 11:30 am
Great video man, intersting !
@rodmileski March 30, 2024 - 11:30 am
unity: mobile or 2d endeless prototyping loop
unreal: for real games ;)

Well this video aged like milk

Your personal goals supersede what I’m about to say. So take it with a fair shake of salt. And I don’t have a whole lot of game dev experience. Just a few simple projects. But I do have a lot commercial dev experience.

At the end of the day you’re still setting up shop in someone else’s house.

If you (not you specifically) neglect learning the underlying technical skills by relying on someone else’s software , you have to weigh the risk of getting the rug pulled out from under you.

It’s basically the same situation with Unreal . Even though the engine is open source, because it’s a huge complex project and they control the ecosystem.
Consider also proprietary formats, plugins and the scope of the dependencies you’re now tied to.

My advice is to not rely on UI tools too heavily as they can always be scuttled . And despite what people say you always run into limitations once you start colouring outside of the lines.

Source: about 10 years as an enterprise .NET developer that’s seen many companies abandon/ sunset important technologies for not being as profitable as they hoped.

My question is about which one is easier for cross-platform portability, because Unity seems to require the "Pro" subscription for Console publishing and Unreal seems to be only dependant on how much profit you as an individual make?
@fokozuynen2048 March 30, 2024 - 11:30 am
I was at a point where i was sure i will switch but then Unity just bring new tools and upgrade and bang is no more need since either of them was equal diference i was just losing time to learn how Unreal work and where have all the things that i actually need and that i actually know where there are in Unity.
@Gatesmusic98 March 30, 2024 - 11:30 am
Unreal won't work on my computer I might switch to unity.
@MontePikkalo March 30, 2024 - 11:30 am
hey, thanks for the video. I enjoyed hearing your opinion since ive learned only wth unreal engine and dont know how to code but love blueprints and visual coding. Great Video!
@beuman0 March 30, 2024 - 11:30 am
Disclaimer : I am on Unreal side, but it in the end it depends on what kind of game you want to do, and most importantly what Engine you have the most experience with. But if you want to do a game with AAA kind graphics, better performance, etc.... Well a big, complex game, Unreal beats Unity hands down. There's a reason why it's a standard in the industry. When I start an Unreal Project I have no postprocess activated whatsoever. Unreal Engine rendering engine is just better and performs better. Tech like Nanite... you won't see this happening anytime soon and Unity. Chaos and Lumens are really outside of Unity range for now, Unity will always lag behind.
Why would we choose C++ over a high level language like C# if we didn't had any advantage in terms of performance ?

@knuckles7410 March 30, 2024 - 11:30 am
Aged like milk :))
@warcreatures March 30, 2024 - 11:30 am
However, for some reason Unreal crashes me with the example project.... That doesn't happen to me in Unity.
@shanliumoshi7904 March 30, 2024 - 11:30 am
Well said, you are a rational person and will not blindly follow dissatisfaction on the Internet. You are doing great, please keep up the good work.

Some this up . No difference. Watch another video

I am a Unity dev. Atm i decided to try Unreal due to graphics, but the thing is - i don't think that is not the reason why i am leaning towards sticking with unreal. I think the core reason is - no matter how much i like Unity - it's simply not as capable as Unreal. For example - almost any variables ca be modified with out of the box lerp or random or curve. Blueprint system itself is crazy good. In Unity while writing code - you have to be super on point with how you manage triggers / events / enums / dependancies. In Unreal - right out of the box - just create an enum and use it wherever you want. Same with events - just create a custom event and hook up anything wherever without the nightmare of carrying references over. I think yes - The huge trade off is learning C++, but the option of using custom code with blueprints together in a streamlined manner i think is the selling point for me
