I remember in an interview Paul King who was the director stated that Wonka takes place 20-25 years before the original movie which leave many years for a dark turn to occur in Wonka’s life. This movie is showing how Wonka gained his success in selling chocolate.

I watched it last month, and, believe it or not, I had a similar experience as when I watched the Tim Burton version. At first I was like "Okay, this is pretty childish, but it has charm." I kept watching and I was like, "Hey, could it be that I'm really liking it?" I finished watching it and I was like "Nope, I didn't like it. I loved it."
