Drum & Bass is the backbone of the UK scene, it’s super varied and is a complete melting pot just like the UK.

Started in 94 when Goldie invented Jungle, playing speeded up breaks around 170bpm, this was an evolution of house that had speeded up into what is called hardcore. Jungle had much more of a groove and a hip hop influence & with huge Jamaican community in the UK it exploded into soundsystem culture +MDMA. MCs would toast at raves and eventually they got more lyrical. Jungle evolved into drum and bass that has cleaner drum pattens but the production level got pretty insane, way higher than Hip Hop did in the 90s. Jungle/Drum & Bass is the scene all the Grime OGs grew up in but the MC circuit was difficult to get onto. They got into Garage which was usually in room 2 of Drum & Bass rooms, which soon got bigger in the 00s and then evolved into grime. Hip Hop has been an influence in all of these scenes but no more than Dancehall, House, Techno.

Fast forward to today, UK Drill flipped everything and progressed the level rhyming but the roots are still there even though most kids don’t even see it.

This is Chase & Status doing a Hip Hop track but you can the level of production in their synths / mastering. There has been this crossover in the past, checkout Adam F & Redman – Smash Something

This isnt drum and bass, this is 140 or breakbeat. Chase and Status are DnB producers though but make a range of tempos. Check out 'take me away' or their breakthrough album ' more than a lot'. Bear in mind that this music is almost 30 years old so youve got a huge amount of catching up but i can tell uou that this is the most dynamic music on the planet which pushed sounds abd techniques far ahead if other genres. A good portion of the music is instrumental, this is dance music born from soundsystem and rave culture and is our 'hip hop'. Sounds included are the most varied within any genre hard, techy, jazzy, soulful, ragga, dub, orchestral, ambient etc. The most original sounds and break beat programming is from DnB.

Chase and Status make more than drum and bass.. this track isnt DnB, def a hip hop drum pattern. DnB is around 170bpm and drum pattern has breaks, e.g. the Amen break that kinda defined the birth of Jungle/DnB!

Yeah chase n status are a producer duo. They remixed ‘original nuttah’ – shy fx feat apache. To celebrate original nuttah 25 anniversary.
