Musician Sheku Kanneh-Mason, the former BBC Young Musician of the Year and cellist at Meghan and Harry’s wedding has revealed he didn’t stay until the end of the event as he didn’t want to be there when the crowd sang ‘Rule, Britannia!’ He went on to say that it should not be performed, and there are so many other great pieces of music which could replace it. Kanneh-Mason said it leaves a lot of people feeling uncomfortable, even if they feel good singing it.
So, is it time to ditch this anthem at public events?

One fit the things that unties the uk this song
Susana Reid’s argument that if someone feels uncomfortable about something then that is a good enough reason to stop the thing. So if someone feels uncomfortable about her show then that’s a good reason to stop it 😂😂😂😂
What a fool he clearly has not listened to the lyrics or understood the context the words were written in 🤔
Britain wasn’t kidnapping African slaves that was done by black Africans, who transported them to trading posts on the African coast to sell for British goods to transport them over the Atlantic to the Americas to be sold and shipp back sugar, cotton, tobacco, rice etc to Britain. Africa has been enslaving other Africans and other peoples for thousands of years and despite Britain’s best efforts to eradicate it is still going on today.
What's profoundly discomforting is sharing our land with people who hate the country, it's people and it's values.
It’s my ringtone !!
Classic example of why commentators should do their due diligence before taking a position in front of the nation. Femi didn't do his research, then had to defend the indefensible after being told the truth about the origins of the song, then actively lied about it later as a means of doing this. He's got to feel bad watching this back…
NO
Don't like our history or our songs associated with our history and our diffience against our foes. Then you are the later.go get yourselves a life elsewhere and see how that goes for you😂😂😂
Only the uneducated and ignorant people will not understand and feel uncomfortable. Once they learn the truth about this song then they should join the rest of us and celebrate it 😂😂😂😂😂
Here we go again..they need to learn our history and not interpret as something that suits them
ditch the people who are uncomfortable
Oh dear, someone feeling 'uncomfortable'! Let's change everything because of it. This guys finds everything racist.
if they dont like it leave
No
The youth of today dont have a clue the price our fore fathers made for OUR FREEDOM..GET AN EDUCATION IF YOU WANT TO LIVE HERE AND HAVE SOME RESPECT…🇬🇧
SHUT THE DOOR ON THE WAY OUT PLEASE ..AND DONT SLAM IT..🇬🇧
RULE BRITTANIA ..SING IT LOUD AND PROUD…👍👍🇬🇧
Ask him is he will be willing to go to war for the uk , i bet the the answer is No
This is civil war. I am very old and disabled but very patriotic. I cannot march but I can show my PATRIOTISM by posting a UNION JACK in my window for all to see. The flag just fills the window (5 X 3 ft) is readily available at a very reasonable price from flag shops.
NB. I will vote REFORM ! ! !
What about the Barbary Coast Pirates raiding southern England taking men, women & children from the village streets & homes? Lots of USA Cotton slaves were importing black African slaves themselves after their six years indenture. Given a plot of land & farmed cotton themselves. Anthony Johnson for instance shipped in hundreds, the profits went on more land & his own slaves were often not released after their six years, He was a very rich black guy.. What about the music they sang? Should "Swing Low Sweet Chariot" be banned? Was it a racist song against Land Owners??
So, if a minority of people don't like Rule Britannia, that is reason enough to deprive those who do enjoy the song and who know it's not about slavery. The ignorance of some people seems to be wilfully unbound. Sing it loud and proud.
What a shame to give in to the minority. It is our music and if it upsets people who are still going on about something that happened hundreds of years ago, they should get their heads out of their rears.
It’s a wonderful patriotic song. We had a very large Empire on which the sun never set. We brought civilisation to Africa – the Africans had education, health care, very little crime and above all, fair play. Look at those countries now -their Governments are full of corrupt politicians. Zimbabwe is a basket case – as Southern Rhodesia she fed not only her own people but those of a number of other African countries. Rule should be by those who are fit to rule, which is not necessarily the majority.
If you feel uncomfortable you don’t understand the song, listen to the song the song is about freedom "The nations not so blest as thee
Must, in their turn, to tyrants fall,
While thou shalt flourish great and free:
The dread and envy of them all."
if you dont like it the no one forces you to stay here you are free to leave and let us british people show our patriotism
Trust Femi to jump on the bandwagon, why this guy still lives in the UK is beyond me, as he seems to hate everything about it.
The answer is NO
