Erik Satie was a French composer and pianist, born on May 17th, 1866 and by all accounts, he was thought of as a talentless musician in his formative years. At least that’s how Georges Mathias, his professor of piano at the Paris Conservatoire described him. “Insignificant,” “laborious,” and “worthless” were his exact words.
Émile Decombes, another one of Satie’s piano professors called him “the laziest student in the Conservatoire.”
It’s true, Satie wasn’t much of an accomplished piano player — he was a horrible sight reader — but he was a master composer.
His compositions have been featured on everything from The Simpsons and How I Met Your Mother to The Royal Tenenbaums, Dr. Who and The Benny Hill Show, not to mention hundreds of commercials.

Who do you think are some of the most eccentric musicians today?
Sounds like Debussy
How many here after listening to Gnosiennes Lent 1?
I am all in favour of being unconventional as long as no one is hurt. Mr. Satie is now a hero of mine and I only wish that I had his talent!
Hey I know that sample! "So come on down to The Outer Worlds, there's ample opportunity so help yourself! A splash of color really helps to sell the promotional utopia surrounding hell!"
after the Flop Ballet, the Famous artist Pablo Picasso took the hand-made set pieces out into the street and….. burned them.
Gymnopedia means….Children Playing Naked.
I think I'd put Gesualdo as weirder and more eccentric.
Satie had OCD. He was extraordinary!
I laughed out loud when he said the velvet gentleman haha
Only one word to describe this: cool.
Pointing out other musician's issues in such a shitty way is the reason I gave this a thumbs down. You are ignorant!
100% absolute genius, I think I would have got along with him very well,
He was a weirdo but a great art maker, now shall I remove Gymnopedie no 1 from my bio? As it represents a weirdo guy 😂
What BS he goes horse-riding on his domain, so he was 'rich; then.
I play Satie almost daily, but finding his inner voice within the notes is hard. When I play the Gymnopédies cycle, there are so many encountered feelings and colors hidden in that music. My favorite is the number 5; I think this is the most daring one of them all. The weirdest music I have ever seen by Satie is the Desiccated Embryos (Embryons desséchés), especially the marginal comments to these pieces, such as "I forgot my tobacco," adding later, "Thank God I don´t smoke." How do you add such a character to a piece of music? Not to mention his weird selections for embryos like sea cucumbers and other odd creatures. I love Satie, though.
The pronunciation of fuschia made me laugh harder than it should have. It's "FYOO-shia", like few. C'mon now.
So I have been enjoying the Gymnopedes , written by a weirdo?
Sounds like Andy Kaufman in many ways.
A+ video!
LOVE IT! Fascinating video about the eccentric musician!
Just watched the video "Vexations" (3+ minute video), very vexing!
No no, I explain this simply, he was a Taurus…and he was half Scottish.
his name is one letter removed from satire. that should tell you all you need to know
Maybe Andy Kaufman was his reincarnation.
I think Satie would have enjoyed the music from Art of Noise.
After watching this, I have decided to keep "Gymnopedie No. 1" but to conveniently NOT remember (lol) the crazy man who wrote it!
How the heck did he stack two grand pianos???? By himself??????????
Gnossienes is a fantastic moody tune and deserves a re release by a modern artist maybe???
I`m so glad I watched this! Satie has always been one of my favorite composers but I had no idea what his character was like. The thing I found most interesting is the way he titles his songs. I also compose music though not professionally just for personal pleasure. Also I`m talking about electronic stuff not with instruments but my stuff is pretty much all avantgarde as well. The thing is that I also name my tracks with absurd titles similar to that of Satie (I had no idea what any of them meant up until now). Ofc I can`t say if Satie did so for the same reason as me though judging by what I heard I think it`s very likely. I like using titles that have obscure meaning because they create a mental image that thus creates some sort of expectation but usually it`s of something that a person wouldn`t associate with music in any way thus creating a sort of cognitive dissonance. I do it because a) it`s funny and b) by setting a very particular and at the same time obscure expectiation that couldn`t possibly be met I`m disassociating myself from my work in a way. As in I just want people to listen and explore the music on it`s own without attaching my character or any meaning to it.
Loool how to not love this guy!?
