I actually went to Kakunodate, its a great place and I loved it there. The wifi was also faster in the town that was pretty much in the middle of nowhere compared to my house in Jakarta 😂

It really is too bad that the weather's been so warm and rainy this winter - Kakunodate, including the "Samurai district", is beautiful in any weather - but I'm guessing no film crew likes to shoot under those conditions 😕

Something I'm sometimes told by locals is that the art director for Totoro was from Ota-machi, Akita (now part of Daisen City), and people say growing up by the Ou Mountains helped inspire his art direction. I haven't explored enough of other prefectures' countryside areas to yet make that distinction, but it's a cool factoid.
Weather was pretty bad this winter. After the initial mild blizzard, everything melted to the dirt, making it feel like an early "brown season" (one of Japan's famous "9 seasons": Snow, Icicles, Brown, Flowers, Hot and Bugs, Hotter, Kinda Hot, Pleasant, and Fall).
