What? No triangle boobies???
PASS.
Edit: spoke too soon… Well done!
i am not sure why i am watching reviews on this game because will still buy it just to relive those memories playing this game on the PS1. However the biggest disappointment is they only did 1-3 when last revelation with that Egyptian setting was the best.
These games were definitely too hard for me as a kid. The controls were interesting. Kinda clunky. Still own them on steam but just couldn't get into the old era. Love the new era tomb raider though
The only question that matters is whether or not we can trap the butler in the freezer
Now we need the same done to The Last Revelation and Chronicles, then a complete remake of Angel of Darkness. AoD is my favorite even though it’s a literal broken unfinished game, it would be amazing to have it be fully realized and given the love it deserves.
Hack slashing button mashing tards need not apply
I remember when a game magazine did an April fools edition where they put black boxes over Lara's clothing. They presented it as an upcoming game. To a gamer it was obvious that it was just Tomb Raider but not to a bunch of moms who thought it was real. I guess the article even made the news in some areas.
Where do you play the bonus content?
This set is absolutely perfect! Tank is awesome. Thank you for bringing back the real Lara Croft. Not the crybaby fake Lara. Everyone should have this in their collection.
I wasn't expecting much. They looked like shit since they were announced. They really didn't put a lot of effort into these, modders have done a better job at preserving these titles over the years. Just looking at the bookshelves in Lara's house, I mean, come on.. Why would they not fix up the sprites so the spines of the books weren't half of Lara's body size? Or the kitchen sink? Or the same paintings all over the place. The lighting is terrible practically everywhere to the point you HAVE to switch back to the original graphics just to realize where the hell you are. They could have definitely done a better job. There's no reason that far off in the distance they couldn't have made the scenery look better and much less blocky. Slightly rounding some surfaces and giving her some feel for the difference in the hitboxes could have made things a bit better. Including some quality of life things, such as tapping 'Y' to shimmy along walls faster would have been nice.
As for the price, well.. I've gotten the whole previous collection for less than $20. It included all of the original versions of these games. I think a $10 price tag for all that they did would be reasonable and $4 for people who already own the originals. I'm sure they'll drop price drastically not too long from now. And they definitely should have added Chronicles and The Last Revelation. These were very much a part of the "original" series. Legend and onward, I can understand not including those. They were a turning point for the series graphically and with the engine itself. This is the perfect example of why studios need to drop the whole "Remaster/Remake" BS and start making real games again. They're not doing us any favors and certainly just out to make a quick buck.
Amazing games, insta buy!
The story was good just not a lot of cutscenes
Fuck new players, this game is for us.
This will be great for $10.
I have to say it, you suck at jumping. That being said, i fondly remember this game when me and my friend got it, and we played at another friends house cause he had a color tv, and more friends showed up, and then everyone's girlfriend showed up, and the complaints of said girlfriends were just epic. Along the lines of "You rather play with her then with me? Well, she's got buttons, and does my bidding…" It was over in 4 days of no sleep. And of course, it started right over again with TR2 and TR3… But by then, some of the girlfriends were playing too. So it all worked out in the end!
I am enjoying my first play through on these for years, and for the first time playing them on my Switch in handheld mode. I think they struck the right balance between reskinning them, and totally redoing them.
Are they hard – yep – will the modern gamers have the patience to complete them with tank controls – that will be an interesting one to fully understand in time.
I last played them all the way through on my PS1 when they originally released, and while I did buy them and still own them on my PSVita – I just couldnt manage the games on the Vita, purely due to the lack of R/L2 buttons – that reliance on the back pad was innovative in the day, but the switch has proven that a full controller set up is possible in a handheld.
I agree, I just wish they had done 4 and 5 of the PS1 titles. I hope they solve that and make them too.
This game must be hard to play with one hand…
Rather have a remake
Every time this game made me madd, I would start playing Need For Speed 3 Hot Pursuit and my day would get better
TR2 was my favorite, too! I also really liked that you mentioned how the controls were independent from the camera and why that worked. I always prefered games with this type of controls, actually, I still do… and wow having played the PS1 version where you could only save at certain points AND ONLY ONCE, the save system is an upgrade, even if it's a very careful and not very well-done upgrade. Also wow would I not play that game again on the actual PS1. I can't take the suffering anymore. On an emulator though? Why not. At a price point of 30 bucks buying the remaster is a fair deal though, can't say anything, it's three full-length games after all and they indeed don't seem to look as shitty as some reviews made me think.
Oh and I liked that you gave credit to them having a new game ready every year for those three games, that's freaking amazing, also they all had PC versions, too! And they did not have Unity where you just have to build for a different platform (ok and cry for three days and probably optimize some stuff but… consoles were not proprietary PCs in the 90s).
I think people is having issues whit modern controls, because they don't use the walking button or rotate the camera while moving? I feel modern controls and button combinations are to advanced on this Game than from other type of games in general
TR2 was one of my first games ever. I was a little kid. Now that I’m playing it again, I can’t believe how bad the controls were!!!
How do you pick up items??? (On switch) I've died like 8 times trying to pick up the shotgun and medipack while them two flying demony things attack ol
physical release when?
In this case play tomb raider: anniversary. They did a good job and the story is like the tomb raider I
Buying this at launch on GOG was a total no-brainer for me. I have fond memories from playing (and also rage-quitting at times) these games in the late 90s.
And I love what they did with this remaster. What Aspyr did with Tomb Raider here is kind of what NightDive Studios did with the DOOM and QUAKE series.
Fortunately there are Studios like NightDive and Aspyr who really know their stuff and also understand the magic sauce that make these good old games special.
This review was more negative than I was expecting. Also, Tomb Raider Anniversary is not very good and certainly not better than the original.
So this is basically the copy of PS3 remastered games? Yeah, it not just looks like that, a friend told me that too. He got this "new" remastered collection. I frankly have only that games of the first games, and it have some bonus too.
I only need one copy of the remastered games😂
I also must have a reason to start up PS3 now and then😉
Do yourself a favour and play with the tank controls, otherwise you gonna hate this game.
Why no Platinum?
I would have bought it, even with your warning.
I played these games, especially the second game loads.
So I was looking forward. I even tried to boot up and play TR2 ironically weeks before the announcement of the remaster, and i straight up quit as I totally had forgotten what the original control system was like.
So I pre-ordered this, and look forward to it.
I’ve lost count of the time I’ve missed jumps with the modern system. Hit load instead of save.
Wanting to side-step or tank spin ontop of a precious platform only to then bolt of the side.
The camera failing to accommodate close quarter combat. The step back only working the combat lock-on. Occasionally Lara just turns around mid combat and runs towards the camera instead of back stepping, lock on being lost as you leap over things. Man the list is large. It’s almost as unplayable as the original control scheme 🙂
"It's stiff and it's slow, but it works."
That's what she said.
Perfect way to remaster a series imo
Before you buy it = buy it
My memory of playing these games was: playing for a couple hours and enjoying it, dying to some absolute fuckery, turning it off because the save points were too far apart.
Thx so much for this review. Saved me from an unecessary purchase. I totally forgot how bad the gameplay was xD
This was a fully analyzed combined with some history before you buy 👍🏾
Nope didn't like them on the ps1 won't like them now
Yea bought this the day before it came out. Now i am stuck. How does the game save progress?
people who have a problem with games dont buy games. when will devs like cd ever learn?
I'm looking forward to modern textures for Lara's chest that will come from mods most of all.
Very clear, fair assessment. Appreciate it.
Eh I will wait until it’s on PS Plus.
Nice the game retained simple graphics, not all games need to have ultra realistic graphics, sometimes i like playing platformers that are simple.
It's not perfect but nothing nails the feeling of isolated exploration like the first Tomb Raider games. I am loving this release so much.
By definition this is actually an exact example of a remaster. It was mastered (balanced audio, picture, gameplay) and then they mastered it again with new tech used on the original source code. That’s the difference between a remake and a remaster. I hear a lot of people debate this as though it’s not actually clearly defined, which is okay. But, that’s the definition.
