Why Modern Movies Suck – The Curse Of Multiverses

If there’s one thing everyone is sick of now, it’s multiverses. Instead of an interesting new way to put characters in unexpected situations, they’ve become a crutch for lazy writing, and it needs to stop.

Imagine if in "A Christmas Carol," the 4th spirit was the Ghost of All Christmas, who showed up and warned Scrooge that if he didn't fulfil his canon event of learning to love Christmas, then all of reality would tear itself asunder.

Y'know, I wouldn't be surprised if that movie comes out on Netflix in the next few years.

I feel that Multiverses work best with crossovers and sandbox video games.

The Resident Evil movies with
Mila Jovovich are a perfect example of this phenomenon but without the in-universe excuse of “it’s another world” nor even of any explanation at all.

Movie 3, all the water on Earth suddenly disappears for… reasons. Movie 4, waters back! Because… um… look over there! Dozens of Mila Jovovich’s!

I think thats why no way home was the best of the marel multiverse stpries. Yeh id did have the hugs many wolds stake but you really only focused on 3 spiremen and a small group of villains who have a strong emotional and narrative bond with said spiders.
Big concepts - small stakes

We can nowadays tell if a movie is going to suck just by watching the trailer. 90% of trailers are exactly the same shit: tense music, THAT piano key, epic music, a bad joke thrown in for no reason... I immediately knew the version of Napoleon available at cinemas wasn't going to be good because of that and some killed me for saying it. If the trailer's shit or the same as the other ones and there's nothing in there that persuades me to give it a watch, then I won't.

Its like they are using chatgpt for screenplays

With respect, can we stop blaming "lazy writers" alone? It's a bigger problem than writing alone. It comes from above.

This did a fantastic job of explaining why multiverse and time travel stories can be so unsatisfying, with a cogent explanation of how to do those right as well--to serve the main storyline, not subvert it.

Get rid of “super heroes” would be a good start

Kinda wish for some story with Multiverse, where original universe is in failed state and heroes travel to other to prevent that state. But in the end they return on ashes of their own world with nothing to change here anymore, only to keep living and grieving for what they lost in their own universe.
@MrSlowestD16 January 26, 2024 - 12:52 pm
The multiverse failed when it became a crutch to fix bad writing rather than a potential tool in the tool belt.

The Terminator was a brilliant example, after the 2nd film, they just made 5hitty imaginations and I just no loner cared. I love Red Dwarf, brilliant example of it done right.

I hate multiverse bc it means any story your watching where something bad happens some1 dies there infinite other timelines where there alive so there death doesn’t matter
@psychkosys January 26, 2024 - 12:52 pm
Stop watching franchise superhero and sci fi movies and the problem is solved. Sequels/prequels have long been a lazy cash grab, this is nothing new.

Ah I forgot about ace, and how much of a Smeg head rimmer was
@mrstorytale January 26, 2024 - 12:52 pm
The only one that done multiverse right and everyone was happy with the way that was done was Spider-Man into the multiverse. All the others have sucked real bad.
@Domtronic January 26, 2024 - 12:52 pm
Good movies dont need a multiverse
@realperson69 January 26, 2024 - 12:52 pm
Multiverses can be a window into “what ifs” that inform our understanding of the setting, characters, or plot.

Or they can be an excuse to recycle popular branded assets.
