This is ALL good news! GONE are the days when the entire NFL used the Lions as their retirement plan, the last pitstop. GONE are the days when Detroit was the easy free agent paycheck before the player QUIT because the Lions were DESPERATE. GONE are the days when they signed washed-up stars for jersey sales! Let them go, and let's be happy! We've got winning to do!!!
We picked up the #1 FA i wanted to sign.
Why do the Lions release Smith but keep Davenport…..has Davenport even last year. Oh, that's right. Lions paid him 6 million for that…
At least we didn’t have to give up any draft picks for DJ Reed. Brad Holmes will draft 2 pass rushers. Either 2 edges or 1 edge and 1 LB. You called it Craig.
GET Z SMITH BACK PLZ… he had more sacks than maxx ,burns and sweat
D.J Reed!!!
Good points!!!
I love Ameek!
Never a fan of this guy Carlton Davis. I followed him when in Tampa. He was mediocre while he was there.
Dont get why they realease Smith, after all the talk last season on how great this line would be with him and Hutchinson. So they release him but resign Davenport, whonis ALWAYS injured for $5 million??
Re-signed Davenport and released Smith? Kept a guy who’s ALWAYS hurt and got rid of a guy who wanted to be here. Seriously, I know Brad Holmes knows wayyyyyy more about football personnel than I ever will but that one makes me scratch my head. I’m hoping this is just to make some room for someone else to come in. Really want Hendrickson, would settle for Mack or Von Miller.
Rather pay Reed as well. You get and actually plays a whole season sometimes.
Dj Reed is definitely cheaper
When is a million dollars a lot of money and when is it not? What is the value of an opportunity against absolute dollars received? Thinking of Carlton Davis, which would prove to be the most valuable – an $18K+ contract with a team that's not going anywhere or a $15K contract with the Lions and a better than even chance of playing in the Super Bowl? Like you mentioned, I believe they have his replacement on their roster now.
Slay ? Crazy this isn't thr old Lions
the way i see it, last contract his money was short, so he sign with lions. Now he is better money wise and can afford to ask for more. He was in a position , not so good, now in better position.
Free agency will be trash injury prone players thats all brad likes to sign
Z would have been much better with Hutch in the line up
I hope dj gets a another big contract and signs with a another team
Click bait! This is not good news.
If you look at who has contract extensions coming up then a lot of what the Lions are doing makes more sense. They didn't want to pay the 32 year old DE Smith a huge roster bonus that came due – almost 7 million dollars. The scuttlebutt was that he refused to restructure his contract – which was a mistake on his part. He disappeared the last few games of last season – had four sacks and three tackles for loss in eight games for the Lions and did not record a stat outside of a pass deflection in Detroit's divisional round loss to the Washington Commanders to end their season. And his sacks came in his first 4 games – none in the last 4. His age catching up to him perhaps?
CD3 has a big ego and he's often been injured through his career. That's my big thing as to why he's asking too much. The Lions signed all their linebackers so I suspect they'll be used more in our plans – CB's not as much. Barnes is great at covering passes so he can help out whoever is at cornerback. They're one of our strong points so we should utilize them more.
I agree that current corners can start. Pick up a Milton or whoever to build depth. Use the savings on an edge
We don’t need Davis, amik Robertson locked Justin Jefferson down, Robertson is a CB 1
go get your bag C.D. , by by
Pay him pay him pay him 1:21 1:23 1:25 1:27 😂
5:48 Slay would be the perfect plug in, for a mentor role, not really a starter but def a piece to the puzzle, rotational player
PS 2 yr deal not 1 imo
bad business move pay a little more cut the bad.. yea sure we only spent 4 million on davenport but we coulda paid za'darius and got a 4 million discount with that kind of logic
We'll find out if Ennis Rakestraw is ready. If our DL is solid our secondary will be better.
Asante Samuel Junior would be a great addition
I'm ok with CD not coming back to the Lions. He is a good CB 1 in the league but to be paid 18-20 mil per season is a bad business decision for the Lions. BH has to address the d line first. If they have a good day line in 2025, then TA, Rakestraw, and Amik Robertson will do just fine without CD. CD wants his long term security and I don't blame him for that. Go get it. Just not with the Lions
Smith being released should have been the bad news….that contract was team friendly
I like it…makes alot of sense to go with what we have and ameek on outside and sign slay 👍
