OpenLara тАУ Play Tomb Raider in HD, 2-play co-op mode & as an FPS!
ItтАЩs been around a little while but I just got around to trying it. Provide this game engine with the original Tomb raider game files from either PC, PSX or Sega Saturn and you can play on many modern systems in HD.
I am using the OpenLara core for RetroArch but there is a standalone version, a Switch port, an original Xbox port and many more. There is even a web based version you can play.
If youтАЩre a fan of the original and early Tomb Raider games I canтАЩt think of a better way to play it on a modern system.

Thanks for watching. OpenLara has got to be one of the BEST ways to play the original Tomb Raider on a modern system. Not only do you get to play in an upscaled internal resolution and in widescreen, it has a first person mode and even 2-play co-op mode! It's amazing. I don't know how I missed this one for so long!
Use this to make Tenchu better?
This heartbeat music is giving me anxiety…
this is very cool but i am confused by your editing. did you get the clips and the narration mixed up? you keep mentioning points then pause for a while as if to show visually what you mentioned but a lot of the times you dont show anything relevant to the thing you mentioned at the time.
Imho the controls don't need to be forgiven. They're the best part of the grave. It's just games don't play like that any more. Time raider controls were more reliable than even modern games. They had an learning curve but were fantastic
is this better or worse than croftengine?
07:09 I wonder how it would look like if they put a heavy normal map on the plants. Just the same texture in black and white in the normal slot of the shader, and ka-boom.
Anybody had luck getting the right alt, shift and ctrl keys to work?
[[EDIT]] only affecting my Linux rigs. Probably just a keyboard layout or setting.
is it available for mac?
I can wholeheartedly recommend grabbing a friend for a play through in split screen co-op mode! We had an absolute blast for two long afternoons ЁЯША Simultaneously exploring the different areas of the levels works surprisingly well. And you can have fun breaking puzzles that were not designed for two Laras running around ЁЯШЫ Co-Op mode is currently not always very well implemented though, like if player 1 tries to use an item he/she is teleported to player 2's location (which can actually be quite useful, but having a teleportation button would have been nice as an intentional feature. P2 can always "teleport" to P1 by leaving and rejoining the game on the fly). I hope we can also play through the other TR games one day ЁЯЩВ
Can the full entirety of Tom raider 1 be played in the web browser
I tried to make a version of the source code in Java, but I give up.
It's too difficult C language, I can't understand how it works.
I only have formal training in Java.
4:40 interesting shadow bug there ЁЯШЙ
The pacing in this video…. Good lord.
wonder if anyones ever tried to get this working on the oculus quest 2 in 1st person mode?
Finally og tomb raider
bobs in HD
but how open is lara?
It needs raytracing
Correction thereтАЩs 5 sequels
Have they done anything to the enemy AI? I remember TR enemies not being the smartest or having the best pathing either.
I'd really like to see this ported to Nintendo 64.
3:46 That wolf has a good sense of humor. Lol
Hope we see new textures next.
The most interesting version of this is the 3do port. All these other versions make me yawn from a technically interesting standpoint.
What a wonderful project!
I wish someone would do a tutorial on how to set it up on Retroarch.
the video content does not match up with the narration (new watereffects, First-Person-Mode, etc), thats very unsatisfying
Saturn 1st here.
Hello. How can I play TOMB RAIDER 2 in Mac. I've played TOMB RAIDER 1 through OpenLara website. But I don't know if already exist a online website to play TOMB RAIDER 2. I would love to play Tomb raider 2. Thank you!
Sorry but how I play the second tomb raider???
I recently played the original 96 pc release o my win98 system with voodoo2. Then played openlara on my win10 system. It's good but something is "off". The feel is not 100% same and I prefer the original for now… Ill check back in a couple of years. That terrible ackward FOV 1st person view however .. that is totally not how it is meant to be played and only gives headaches. Coop sounds cool but I can think of so many parts where the player behind will get stuck permanently with doors closing and so on..
7:48 I disagree. Yes, the creators of OpenLara have achieved something incredible and the enhanced visual effects are great, but the obsession with graphics, frame rates, and God knows what else of people nowadays really annoys me sometimes. Imo, the best way to play the classic games is exactly as they were intended to be played: on the PS1 (or using a PS1 emulator on the PC which gives you the original experience + improved resolution). The PC versions of TR3/TR4/Chronicles are great as well. To be quite honest, there's a lot of things I dislike about OpenLara–the camera, for example. It's stuck in this weird fixed position that makes me feel dizzy after a while. When Lara pulls out her guns, the camera would move further away from her so the player could have a better grasp of their surroundings. This doesn't happen in OpenLara. The realtime shadows feel too "heavy" for a lack of a better word and sometimes are downright pitch black. Not really a fan. A lot of rooms lose some of their original brightness and atmosphere due to the new lighting system and are too dark. Besides that, I think it's a cool alternative way to experience the classics, but I certainly wouldn't say it's the definitive and best way. Part of the charm of older/retro games are also some of their limitations. You don't need PS5 water effects in a PS1 game to fully enjoy it.
The problem with the openlara version is that when you lose all your weapons etc in the natla mines level you do not get them back and do not end up with enough ammo etc to beat the skate boarder, huge boss and then natla, any tips, the only way I could find was to use dozy mode.
Ooh! I wonder if we'll see ray-traced lighting like they've done with Quake at some point.
It's still a little bit glitchy, the enemies sometimes bug out and get stuck e.g. the lion on Palace Midas that should come around the walkway above the pool, it got stuck on the corner and was easy prey. This happens a lot to enemies making them easy kills.
Also shimmeying on walls can be glitchy too – Lara will sometimes get stuck and float off the platform. I almost got stuck on Natla's Mines just after where you kill the first enemy – I dropped off the edge onto the platform with the save crystal. But Lara would not grab the edge at all, and I kept falling into the lava. Eventually I managed to glitch onto the platform below and continued on.
But I did manage to finish the game using it ! It looks like it has been updated since this video as my water effects looked a lot nicer than this video, and the shadows were a lot less glitchy too. It takes the best parts from the PS1 game also e.g. you can use the Save Crystals for extra challenge, and the Uzis actually have their beefy PS1 sounds not the garbage PC sound effect. Also you get all the right PS1 music tracks as well as the PC ambience too. So you get the danger music with the T-REX and also the creepy Atlantis heart beat.
Also the outdoor mechanic looks great too, it's wierd seeing the Lost Valley with an actual daytime sky lol.
I wonder if they could include the IOS versions HD textures? and maybe a TR2 version? it lets you open Tomb Raider level files but I haven't yet tried it with the TR2 levels or the TR1 Shadow of the Cat expansions.
I liked the controls, but maybe that's just my nostalgia talking ЁЯЩВ Interesting project.
chotto matte….. 2 player co-op?!
